It's not much consolation to you, but I can confirm TMC does work, I've often had the option to re-route and in addition can browse TMC events. Try Bretts suggestion then give another disk a whirl.

To get you could try a scrap yard, Ebay etc. To get to the aerial remove the centre upper cover then... Might be worth just checking the connections first.

I've never had TMC errors so not had to troubleshoot them, but I remember v3.22 had faulty firmware which caused TMC problems. Have you looked at the TMC diagnostics page to see what info there might help? If you'd like to try another disk just in case it's that I can post you one to try.

You are right, though all he was doing was getting someone to turn up the gain on the drive to the laser. This would only work if it was the laser that was dying due to lowered output. The gain is carefully calibrated when new, you can tweak it yourself, but without a standard calibration disk...
