    If it clears after a few seconds I would suspect crap in the exhaust boxes is being shifted by the engine breathing better. There will be a large amount of black stuff sitting in the back box of a high mileage diesel.

    Strange sound when reaching biting point in 1st gear only

    If it is anything like mine (before the clutch slip got terminal) here is a grinding noise which best guess is a worn drive shaft as it enters the gearbox. I may be able to take pictures next week during the dismantle.

    Just wondering if you have had any issue with potholes in the past six to twelve months and your current local council response to liability when running over them. Have you checked for damage to alloy wheels, replaced tyres or had to inflate/check pressures in a similar timeframe ?
