oil slightly over the max mark

At the end of the day it's up to you - it's your car after all. If it was my car I wouldn't bother for such a small overfill but I would keep an eye on the level to make sure it's not rising as that could be a sign of something more sinister such as a dodgy injector. With regard to the oil...

    abs vsa pump

Just to confirm that it is essential the brake lines are re-fitted to the ABS unit in their original position. If I get time later I'll take a photo of mine and post it. Alan

Odd noise, not sure what a dodgey wheel bearing would sound like!

The "someone" mentioned by Mike was me. Normally when a wheel bearing starts to go it makes a rumbling noise although this can become more of a howl at higher speeds. Typically it's not a constant level but changes with each rotation of the wheel - sort of a woo-woo-woo noise. It'll also change...

Wheel Bearings - That'll Teach Me..............

I don't feel bad about it. I'm far too thick-skinned for that! Interestingly, the noise did change somewhat when steering left/right. With hindsight I'll put that down to the load on the dodgy tyre changing. Alan

HELP- Cluch Change - Stuck Bolt

Sounds like a good plan to me. Often time and patience make all the difference. I've done work on seized gearboxes a few times - the best way of dealing with them has been a week or two submerged in a tank of diesel. Once you've got a little bit of movement you're 90% of the way there. Alan

HELP- Cluch Change - Stuck Bolt

A 50/50 mixture of ATF and acetone is very good at freeing seized bolts. Alan

    help help help

As far as I'm aware there is no lift pump. That's why there's a priming bulb fitted. It does sound very much like an air leak somewhere in the fuel system between the tank and the high pressure pump. Has any work been done on the car recently? Alan

    Car damage fire !

As to whether the glass marks will polish out it's difficult to say but is there anything to lose by trying? I don't think there's any point in all of us entering further into a discussion on potential liability as we don't know the cause of the fire. Time will tell. Alan

    Car damage fire !

Oh dear, much incorrect information is now creeping into this. The VW's owner, and hence his insurers, are only liable if the damage to your car is attributable to his negligence. It would be down to you to prove his negligence, not for him to disprove it. Third party cover is there to provide...

currently bidding on this! anyone seen it before or got an idea why its so cheap?

Each to his own taste, I suppose. More seriously I'd be wondering what the bodykit may be hiding and how much it's going to cost to put right. Alan

    Car damage fire !

As has been said speak to your own insurers for advice on how to handle this. You will only be able to claim against the insurers of the VW if its owner has been negligent. Alan

Wheel Bearings - That'll Teach Me..............

..........to listen to those who have more experience of these cars than I do. As a professional engineer (chemical, but with a lot of mechanical knowledge) I know full well what a worn bearing sounds like and I was absolutely convinced that's what my car had. I spent a considerable amount of...

    Pathetic Washers

As I said it really is down to how much effort you're willing to put into it! Changing the rear washer jet is dead easy and took me about 5 minutes - it was just a matter of carefully prising the old one out and pressing the new one in. Do make sure that the missing ball is the cause though. A...

    Pathetic Washers

First thing to say is that, apart from the screenwash reservoir, the front and rear systems are separate. If your passenger side washer works OK then the blockage can only be somewhere between the point at which the pipes for the two front washers separate and the driver's side washer jet. The...

    Won't Start...

Jon, I think you are worrying yourself unnecessarily about the ECU. This just does not sound like and ECU fault - they tend to be either permanent or heat-related. My money is still on the connector between the loom and the valve. I know you've looked a this but how closely? It's really a...

    fuel pressure regulator valve

Please be careful over removing the valve. I don't know about this particular model pump but I do know that on some types if you remove and replace the valve you have to go through a learning procedure which can only be done with the proper diagnostic equipment. If the valve is sticking one...

    Won't Start...

Can't give you a definite answer but I agree with your understanding of how most common rail pumps regulate pressure. The valve is very likely to be part of the pump. That said I suspect that the valve itself is not your problem. It's far more likely to be a problem with the wiring. In your...

Oil light and battery light came on

Exactly, Nick. If we know what the speedo and tacho are doing at the time it happens that should prove it one way or the other. Alan

Oil light and battery light came on

The symptoms you have are bizarre. The only time you'd expect to have all three is when the engine is not running. I appreciate it's going to be a bit difficult as it only happens for a short period of time but when it next occurs please have a look at the speedo and tacho to make sure they're...
