I got the garage mechanic to look at it -- it was the motor. Managed to find a used one, installed, working.

Found the handbook. Checked interior fuse 20, middle row, third fuse. It's not burnt out. So it must be the motor. Remove the wheel to change it?

I had the glow plugs changed. The tips were white crusty. The car still started lazily, so I changed the RAC battery to a Bosch one, starts perfectly now.
