Just how noticeable is the sound inside the cabin ? If you have gone to the trouble of changing the flywheel then I would go and have a look at the exhaust and perhaps a failure of the one of the baffles.

Holy Batman! On a first inspection it looks terminal and odd as I have nothing like that here. It does look like the original treatment by the factory has been removed, why is only known to the previous owners. Is the offside subframe anywhere near as bad ?

I've not had another incident, though I have a slipping clutch and my driving adjustments mean I rarely have to 'floor it'.

You could try strapping a mobile phone with a voice recorder app under the bonnet and move it around to locate the noise.

For MOT passing on the Tourer (I-ctdi) I use a bit of Solvol autosol. Rub as hard as possible keeping the same bit of towel. Then buff off with one half of the other side, folding over until the debris and damaged plastic is clear of the panel.

I was able to get to the pipes through the front wheel arch skirt, the pumps are underneath the reservoir and just about accessible.

Having found one of those sleeping policemen in London last week, I have a non effective front windscreen pump. I have got the temprorary fix by bending the arch protector out of the way, swopping the pipes that deal with the front/rear for now but know it will fail an MOT if the inspection...

As it is a Tourer, does it have the standard roof rack, an after market one, or none (like mine ) ?

I would hazard it is a clogging fuel filter, have you tried draining it ?

Yes and no. The boot opens, though now I am committed to helping somebody collect some heavy items later in the week.

And...... Disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes has fixed it, for now.

Thanks I had a similar fix a couple of years back (when I clipped one size of the boot door on a car park bollard). The nearside rear window also fixed itself after disconnecting the battery for ten minutes, but not this time.

Depending on the annual mileage and type of journeys (commute or motorway) you might consider changing the oil and filter more frequently. Additionally a flush of the sump area might also be useful to clear out old contaminants.

If the belt is beginning to play up it could be anything that runs off it or near it, including the idlers. I would get that sorted first, then listen for other noises. I replaced my alternator a few months back and the engine compartment got a lot quieter as a result.
