OK on closer examination it looks like the lock mechanism is working but it slightly out of alignment. Using a screwdriver I can move the lock catch into two closed positions. In the second position it thinks it's closed and the light no longer displays on the dash. So although it closes OK...

Thanks for the replies - I'll take a closer look at the catch mechanism and see if I can work out what's wrong. It looks pretty fiddly to remove because the access panel is quite small I my hands are too big. Looks like I'll be employing my wife to help out.
