Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I've got a mega mile 2.0 vtec Exec tourer on a 53 plate with a 5 speed manual box. The gearbox has very worn syncro on 2nd gear so it crunches for most changes - I try not to use 2nd for this reason. The gearbox in it is an ARK3. Are there any alternative boxes which will fit this without much major buggering about? Also if I was to change the gearbox I'd do the clutch kit at the same time. How much of a pain is it to do? Is it easier to just lift engine and gearbox out of the car and do it that way or would this make a lot of unnecessary work? The car itself is not worth much so is this going to be a false economy and would I be better breaking the rest of the car?

Cheers

Richard

I can't comment on whether other gearboxes will fit, or which internals you could directly substitute (from a different gearbox), but I can say about the best way to get the gearbox out.

If you can't get the car high enough then if you have a suitable lift/crane then you might be better off getting the whole lot out of the top.

But it is a lot easier to take the gearbox out from underneath, as long as you can get the front of the car high enough off the ground to be able to drag the gearbox out.

You will have to get the exhaust out of the way, remove the driveshafts, disconnect the steering rack from the subframe, then support the engine and remove the subframe, and then you will be able to undo and remove the gearbox (not sure at which stage the gear linkages have to be removed)

Thank you Brian. Looks like its more hassle than its worth! I'll probably end up selling the car as it is, a shame but there we go.

Cheers

Richard
