2004 i Ctdi Terrible Engine Noise

Good evening.

Please forgive me if I have started this new topic incorrectly or without the correct permissions.

I have recently purchased a 2004 i Ctdi with low mileage and full service history, and I have to say it has been a fantastic car.

Recently, however, the car has shown its gremlins, and I'm terrified its going to cost me a pretty penny to get it working again.

Let me describe in detail what I experienced.

Driving home I noticed that the turbo whine (or what sounded like turbo whine) increased in volume to the point where it became a howl followed by a loud whistling noise. This only occurred when accelerating. No gas + cruising made no sound.

After nursing the car home, I jump online to research potential problems. I thought I found the answer when I came across a post that described my noise quite perfectly. The post concluded that it was a missing jubilee clip on the air intake hose. So I run outside and check mine, only to discover that I too am missing a jubilee clip.

So off I rush to the shops to find a jubilee clip only to find out that the loud howling and whistling has evolved into a very loud rattling (which progressively gets worse).

I get the jubilee clip, and secure the air intake hose (wishing that that would sort the problem) - it doesn't.

The loud rattling has become so loud an obnoxious that it is impossible to drive the car.

I don't seem to have lost much power, however I do think some boost has been lost.

After further research I believe it to be one of three things:

1. Failing water pump
2. Failing alternator
3. Failing timing belt / drive chain.

The rattling occurs slightly when idle, but really picks up when I touch the accelerator. Plus the rattling seems to come from the pulley side of the engine. Strangely though, it actually sounds like it is coming from the rear of the engine, but on the pulley side.

I appreciate the help in this regard, as I need to begin a plan to fix the car.

Hopefully you will find it is the alternator, check to see if you have the short belt fitted, if not get one as this relieves the pressure on the pulley, There is a thread on here that gives excellent info on how to do the job, do a search, but you will most likely need to get a new alternator as well. The info is pinned under 7th gen diy.

Thank you for your reply.

My plan is to take it in first thing and get them to confirm the diagnosis as well as the shorter belt.

I also believe I will be hunting for best prices on new alternators.

Just a passing question; I've had alternators fail on me in the past, but they have never sounded this bad, let alone do heavy rattling when accelerating. Is this a typical sign of a failed alternator for this model?

Funnily enough, I was passing through Waltham Abbey when the problems started.

if your Accord does have the old belt routing then i am pretty sure that would be the issue.

Mine starting to make a clicking sound at first when i went full lock parking the car at work then after driving it for a few weeks it became really loud. Still drive-able though.
I changed the alternator and belt immediately

It was a design fault which Honda rectified at the time but many cars still have the old belt routing.

I would replace the whole alternator and not just the bearings.

Common places to get refurbed alternators are from here - either buy out right or exchange type deal
