I had a full major service the other day (it has a FHSH but my services are indie) and it was the second service i have had, the other being minor. Neither service reminder codes say to change or even check the air filter but the mechanic took a look this time round anyway and boy oh boy, 75% of it looked like a full hoover bag and the remainder not much better. I am hoping now for a bit more performance and mpg hopefully. I raise this just in case anyone else has never checked their filter.

I know what you mean, I don't trust these service reminder systems and codes. Also with manufacturers trying to bring service costs down for fleets, things like air filters get left for 2 or more years.

A previous BMW 320d I had, from the service book the air filter had been in for 3 years! It was totally black with soot, changed that quickly, it was shocking.

Changed my pollen filter at the weekend, that was black also, not quite 2 years old. Just shows how much crap they stop.

Iv gone back to a normal service of 1 year or 12.5k.
Also had the variable service turned off
