Hi

I have just fitted some new Brake Discs to the front of the car and have been reading about the need to bed in the discs.

I have never "bedded in" brake discs before and have hed no problems. Is this esential or overkill or what considering the car is not used for racing.

Regards

It all depends on if OEM brakes are used.
Stock brakes bed in after about 50 miles.
Some after market pads can take up to 500 miles like green stuff .
It does help having pads and disks as new pads on old disks need more bedding in to the worn shape of the disks

As Brett says the the "bed-in" process depends on of brakes used, but for normal brakes it's a case of ensuring that the pads match the rotors in place. From the manufacturing process the disc and the pads won't match perfectly at a micometer scale and therefore you won't have perfect grab and friction (either abrasive or adhesive). After a few miles of braking the pads will wear to match the rotors (as the pads are softer than the rotor) thus giving a "pefect" match between the pads and rotors.

In practical terms, you can do this by taking the car out on an unused stretch and accelerating and braking a few times to speed-up the wear in process. Make sure you don't overcook the brakes though!

Most people don't bother and just deal with the "softer" brakes for the couple of journeys.
