Car wouln't start, lock and unlock solved it

Hi all

Weird thing happened in the car park today after work (car had made it to work running fine and parked all day):
I unlocked it with the fob, jumped in, tried starting and it fired and then immediately cut out; the revs rose to 1k and dropped straight away.
'Bit strange' I thought, so I tried starting it again and it just turned over and over on the starter without firing. I took the key out, locked and unlocked the car again with the fob, inserted the key and it started perfectly again.

This happen to anybody else?
I can only think the immobiliser had a bit of a hissy fit for a second but no idea why.

Thats common on old golfs (early 90s)
