Ive got a detachable towbar, (i think its a Witter), but i cant get the hook to latch into the socket properly.

i thought this was the answer to my problems, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbfS3VYKE5Y , but its not.

It looks like its worked because the hook goes in and the latch springs, but any weight on it and it drops straight onto the floor.

anyone had similar problems?

Vertical or Horizontal fitment?
Witter vertical has a small pin that comes out and locks into the housing.
If the hole is full of dirt it won't lock in place.

vertical,
it seems to locate, but the twisty handle doesnt spin back the full 180 degrees, so its not locating / locking properly
the spring pin fires ok when the bar is out of the bumper, so maybe theres some rust / crud in the recess thats stopping it all locating properly

Could you run a drill into the hole to clean it out? Not drill the hole but just use it to clean any rust out.

from that link its looking like its the Bosal AK6,

i think all i can really do is unbolt the mounting bracket and fiddle with it off the car,and im not sure if i really want to do that.

i just got an accord with a Witter Vertical fitment detachable towbar... its not been used for a while and the socket was a bit rusty,
now, i have recently fitted a brand new witter detachable to our Honda FRV so i have somethign to compare it to.

i inserted the towbar and gently hit the base of it, upwards, with a hammer, it slowly engaged further up and the knob began to twist into position.

basically knocking off the rust....then id remove and repeat.
its getting better, and i need to get it to engage properly by hand and securely but its working.

try this, see if it helps
