Hi,

I'm after a bit of advice on how to get at the EGR plate on my Type V to give it a once over.

The reason for doing this is because the car occasionally stalls when turning at junctions when running on lpg - it has just had a gas service and I was told that the ECU's had a discrepancy and that I had a vacuum leak and/or the EGR valve needed replacing. This is a £375 part from Honda and as I have been reading about cleaning the EGR system on this site I thought I would have a go at cleaning it before replacing parts. I'm not an expert at mechanics but I don't mind taking my time and double checking everything.

I have read through the existing EGR related posts and looked at the You Tube videos but the Type-V engine bay seems different; on Eric The Car Guy's video it shows the wiring harness and fuel rail being pulled to the near side and 3 nuts to remove the fuel rail. On my Accord, the wiring harness goes right across above the fuel rail and I only have two nuts to remove the fuel rail. The wiring harness looks like it is connected to different parts at both ends so can't just be pulled out of the way as in the video.

The 2 nuts holding the fuel rail are in the most awkward of places and I cant get a ring spanner of socket over them - one (near side) has the fuel inlet into the rail directly in front and the other (off side) has some other metal pipe that seems to be welded to the fuel rail. I have tried an open ended spanner on one and the nut is so tight that it started to slip so I gave up - I don't want to damage the nut.

Does anyone have any suggestions on other ways to get at the EGR plate? I only want to clean it out, is it possible to put carb cleaner (or something) down the hole with the EGR valve removed?

Many thanks in advance!

Actually I cleaned the one in my CG8(1.8) last week.

About the wiring loom, you don't have to pull it as the guy in you tube does. Just release the two clips and pull it up, just a bit. Then you can unplug the injectors.

Before taking of the fuel rail, turn on the car, and while its on, remove the fuel pump relay while the car is running in petrol, to release the fuel pressure from the fuel rail.

About the nuts holding the fuel rail, try to use a good quality(really good) open ended spanner, they will came out. That's how I did. If now using a good quality spanner, you will kill the nut.

About the EGR itself, its not that easy, I had to use a 1/4 drive socket, since the regular 1/2 drive sockets will not fit.

Make sure you also clean the the IACV and the throttle plate, they do influence the idle speed allot. Don't know how it is in the Type V, but in mine, you remove the throttle body, and then you have access to the IACV, which sits behind.
