Gearbox whine?

Hey guys!!! I need help in diagnosing a problem.
I have an x reg Honda accord 1.8 and basically am getting a whine in the gearbox area. It's only audible when the car is idling and everytime I press the clutch peddle to the floor, it goes away. When I release it, it comes back on again.
I have done some research and it points to an input shaft bearing or whatever it's called. The gears are fine all thru the upshift and downshift. No wierd noises or grinding.
The clutch is going to be replaced soon so I want to see if the whining can be fixed at the same time if it is a gearbox problem.
Any help highly appreciated.
PS: How much would an input shaft cost?
 
Sounds like the release bearing is noisey they should change this out when they replace the clutch.
 
Input shaft bearing failure is common on 6th gen gearboxes, not a cheap fix, gearbox needs stripping and bearings replaced, full set of bearings around £200, plus labour for stripping and rebuilding box.
 
Wow!! So it's a big job then!! Let me ask then:
1. What are the chances of it failing any time soon?
2. Can I just leave it and just replace the clutch?
3. Is it cheaper to get a used transmission rather than buy the bearings?
 
It will possibly last thousands more miles or potentially collapse a bearing and destroy the transmission. Impossible to tell, however, try a transmission oil change, may help a little.
A used gearbox will be of course cheaper, in fact i have one sat in my store room should you wish to buy one. Probably £150ish. However a used transmission could show bearing noise in a few miles or last for rest of car life.
 
try one more thing.
turn engine on.
press pedal slightly (press while its very easy first 2-3cm.) - does the noise disappear? if yes. then its just release bearing, if no then press more about 20-30% of the max , if disappears- clutch pressure plate spring. If no - then there is possibility that it is its may be primary shaft bearing, or (very little possibility ) that it is clutch disk spring . it can be checked only when disassembling.

buying a used gearbox is the same risk as using your own. it can be with the same defect too. if it is a common problem as Vtecdirect said.
 
@ linas....tried that and the noise is there. When releasing the clutch peddle, the noise comes the moment you hit the biting point. So I guess my input shaft bearing is worn. Am gonna do an oil change soon neway. Hopefully I will see the state of my gearbox and also hopefully it will quiet down a little bit.

By the way how big a job is changing the input shaft bearing after the gearbox is out. Do u have to open it all up just to get to it?
 
I believe you'll have to split it all. they can be changed only from inside
 
It looks similar to a 1.8 vti Civic gearbox which I changed the input shaft bearing on recently.
It is not difficult and you do have to split the casing BUT if you are not technically adept then leave it to someone who is as it can get very expensive, very quickly with all the gears and syncromesh cogs rolling round the garage floor! :unsure:
The easiest way to tell once the gearbox is removed is to try and move the input shaft up and down, any movement is a bad sign.
Best possible solution is to ask Andy at Vtecdirect to see if there is any movement of the input shaft, buy that one if it is good, replace the clutch and release bearing then refit and refill the gearbox with good quality oil.
