humming / rumble - bearing noise

I have had a humming rumbling and sometimes well it sounded like the bearings but then i was told that it was the tyres...

in the end it was the brakes which were really stiff. once these were stripped and cleaned the noise is gone...i'd also note my mileage has gone up too

Last year I had a noise on the back end of my tourer which I was convinced was a bearing. Turned out it was a cheapo tyre that was wearing un even. Replaced both rear tyres and noise was gone.
However the noise is now back almost a year later. Its currently in the garage getting the brakes cleaned and serviced as they are binding. So maybe it was the brakes in the first place!
