Hi all,

Ive just bought a honda accord with 155k on the clock and although it has good service history I thought there is no harm in changing a few bits n bobs for piece of mind (ive done the air filter, pollen filter, oil filter and oil and unsiezed a rear caliper that was causing the handbrake to not work properly). Something I am struggling with is locating the gearbox fill plug on the 2.2 diesel accord? If I look inbetween the engine mount and battery I can see what looks like a fill plug staring up at me. Is that it? Ive looked at the diy threads and it seems to show the fill plug in a different location (positioned at the side of the gearbox). If someone can give me any pointers or point me to a DIY thread (with pics prefferably) specifically for the diesel then that would be great.

Thanks very much

Nick

There three for the gearbox:

1. Drain plug
2. Check plug
3. Fill plug

The drain is on the bottom (as you would expect). The check is at the side in the middle of the box and the fill is on top.

Now, some people use the check hole to fill the box. The process here is drain the fluid, and put a hose into the check hole. Fill with fluid until it fall out and the gearbox is full. Why do this? It can be easier and you need to remove the check-plug to verify the level anyway. I've done both and I find the check-plug fill easier.

It's in the owner's manual if you have one. If not get one -it's handier than you'd think!

Removing the under tray isn't as difficult or time consuming as it looks -though having a couple of spare clips wouldn't be a bad investment as some can be a bit crudded up with grit.

The drain plug is the lower one shown in the middle picture. You'll need a square plug key tool on the end of a long extension to remove the filler plug. To fill the gearbox, connect about 18" of garden hose to the end of a funnel and push the end through the filler hole to avoid spillage. The seal washer is the same as the engine oil one, but I (personally) wouldn't bother replacing it as it is above the oil level. The one on the drain plug is definitely worth replacing though. Not sure about the size of the check plug washer (but fit a new one, they're only a few pence). From memory you'll need just over 2 litres.

If I'm honest, as I've done mine twice and with plenty of life left in the fluid, I've only bought two 1 litre bottles of Honda MTF and topped up the extra 100ml or so from the (part) used oil.

Do a search on eBay for item number 151531408435 or 251763643304.

These are not workshop manuals (there's isn't a UK one available -see other threads) but well worth having. You can always sell it on for the same price when you and the car part company. These are pre-facelift. If yours is '56 or later you may need the facelift one.

Thankyou for the replies. I managed to fill it up from the fill plug. I took the inspection plate off the side to check the level and it took 2.5litres and still didnt show as full. I left it at 2.5litres so hope that will be ok? I used fahads how to guide in the end although I do have a workshop manual which I downloaded here.... http://pdftown.com/?s=accord

I now have a leaky injector and an abs light issue to fix before the mot in febuary.
