Hi,

Well the time is coming to replace the pads front and back on my 08 2.2 Saloon and guess what....? The rear discs will probably need changing also :-/

I've read a number of helpful posts on here about maintenance and possible modifications (mainly concerning twin pot callipers for the front wheels) but I've not seen anything on changing the rear callipers (are there some replacement units with stainless steel guide bars or is it just a question of giving the guide bars on the existing units a good clean every time?)

I've not the tools to do anything major myself so my fallback option is likely to be to go to the local Honda dealer and go for replacement Honda "Happiness" experience (i.e. pads front and pads + discs rear). Which should give an idea of budget... I don't have any complaints about the local dealer they are friendly and generally positive - I just think there have been too many rear disc replacements! (this is my second Accord saloon diesel and I love it!)

Any suggestions gratefully received

Thanks

Dom

HI Dom

The rear brakes on your car do very little braking (10-15%) therefore you would not feel much difference in upgrading calipers. A few members have had problems with upgraded discs warping and causing judder etc. My advice for the rears would be to stay with the oem setup but rather than pay the Honda Happiness price buy the discs and pads from Holdcroft Honda with our discount. You could go to any garage to fit them and the labour would be significantly less than main dealer.

Agree with Paul.

The rear calipers aren't worth upgrading. Even members who have upgraded the front calipers haven't bothered with the rears.

TA used to have a club discount with brakes4u, not sure if they still do, who sell EBC brake parts. Might be cheaper getting the parts from there and getting an independent garage to fit them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give Holdcroft and brakes 4u a call.

As far as the rear brakes go it wasn't more stopping power I was looking for really - just an alternate set that which might have been better for the long term health of the discs.

I'm still thinking about the front set up!

hi mate, went through this couple of years ago...on the rear the old achilies heal of sticking calipers usually reveals itself about 85k or so so i wouldnt worry if your is regularly used and/or low mileage car, better pads is the answer that i have found on the rear and just leave em alone, 65/35 bias on front to rear anyway just mintex or ebc on rear with well greased carriers/setup will see you for a long while. front set up is actually the same as the 2.4 vtec/diesel i.e. same part codes from honda etc some people find that if they have the 2.4 they are quoted more for pads adn discs than diesel owners from honda so be wise! also upgrading brakes from the acura tsx model (usdm) is usually a bet as they have slightly larger discs and pads size/carriers just be aware of the rims potentially being too small to mate with them unless you have aftermarket wheels. hope this helps cheers, al :)

ok - parts on order. I'm going for the standard front pads (the condition of the front discs is fine) and rear discs from Holdcroft (with thanks to Lee and Martin)

I'm going to try EBC Greenstuff pads for the rear and see how it goes

Fitting is scheduled for next Saturday

Received parts from HH today in good order - quick efficient delivery thanks to Lee and Martin

just waiting for the rear pads from EBC...

ah I didn't pick up on that bit of intel - my thinking was that I was getting fed up of problems with the set up of the rear brakes and I'd heard only good things about EBC

hmmm

(fed up = uneven disc wear leading to vibration problems, I realise that a good clean of the whole ***embly might be what was lacking in the past however I had read good things about EBC greenstuff)

it's ok CJ I'm not having a dig I should have asked more!! Here's where I am at

I have had a pre facelift and a post facelift saloon diesel Accord - both fab cars. One of the common issues between both cars has been the rear brakes with much more frequent replacement of rear discs and pads than I have seen before. The first set of discs and pads I had replaced f.o.c. much to my surprise but after that I have had to bear the cost (and I use honda dealers because they are better than any other dealer network I have experienced)

the rear pads seem to go through frequent replacement
the rear discs go through frequent replacement
currently the rear discs are in a poor state and unevenly worn (there is discolouration in a wide band around the surface of the disc and there is some vibration under heavy braking)

I was just getting fed up with the frequency of the disc changes and combined with what I had read I thought that rather than replace the callipers with something more fit for purpose that I would ensure that an independent mechanic would properly clean up the ***embly and fit mildly uprated pads (which I had read good things about) into place.

Perhaps my logic was wrong

it's on its second set of rear discs and second set of pads

5 clicks to fully engage

55k miles

I'll have a crack at inserting some pictures I took in a minute

on both occasions it was a Honda dealer (actually two different dealers due to a move in where I worked!). I couldn't say how the work was done partially because it was before I knew any better than to ask!

I am re reading Al's post on clean clean clean and this is something that is in the forefront of my mind when I go to the garage to get the parts fitted

I feel another hmmmm coming on here and it's not at you CJ. Here's a bit more of a story - earlier this year I was hit from behind by a taxi. It was some whack and took that car off the road for over 5 weeks with extensive repairs. Now I'm starting to wonder if the brakes had to be removed to perform any of the work...

The other bit to this is that due to my circumstances I have very few tools - I'd love to do this and I can carry out some inspection but that's as far as it can go at the moment for me. It's complicated!!

I was told by the garage doing the repair that the car wouldn't have been released to me if all 4 wheels did not align

No there are no more surprises that I have to reveal (I hope i do not discover any more!)

I am hoping that it's the poor quality of the lens on my camera phone which distorts the picture a little however would re tensioning the bolts to the correct torque relieve the problem of the carriers being bent?

Thanks CJ I just checked on the website and the Bodyshop which repaired my Accord is listed as having the specialist kit! (Baylis in Gloucester)

I have done quite a few journeys (motorways and mountain roads) since the repair and the car drives exactly as it did before the accident so I am convinced that the wheels are aligned and that the body repair was completed properly.

Thanks CJ - the conversation has been helpful to me (although a bit worrying at times!!). I appreciate the advice and recognise that without seeing the car in the flesh so to speak it's a bit tricky to comment!

Work and other commitments beckon now so I'll post updates later this week.

rear brake pads received today from EBC - again a quick service and all apparently in good order. Thanks to EBC for a trouble free process

next step now is replacement of the parts which I hope is going to happen on Saturday (all being well...!!)

okay - happily, I now have a set of new pads on the front and discs and EBC greenstuff pads on the rear. I'll bed them in and see how they behave.

My confidence in the mechanic was given a boost when he described how he had cleaned everything off and spent the time to do a proper job and that was without me nagging him!

Thanks again for all the advice received :D

just an update - over 100 miles later and I've just made a journey through Snowdonia with no troubles at all. The stopping is back to its best and no noise or vibration from the back. One happy Accord owner again! :)
