2.4 Type S Tourer
Hello

After replacing the rear discs and pads on my '04 2.4 TypeS Tourer the discs appear to be getting rather hot. I am going to try and have a look tonight as I suspect the pads may not be moving freely enough in the carrier. Can any of you advise the size of the Hex head of the two bolts holding the carrier or slider (not the caliper) I think it is 14mm but not sure. I had an issue with removing one of said bolts and really need to get new ones (the hex head got rather damaged) I am hoping I can get some from Honda or elsewhere but want to make sure to get correct size and unfortunately I am unable to check at work, can anyone advise please?

Many Thanks

You can get them from a dealer. Here are the diagrams for rear brakes on 2.4 Tourer

For your car, should be the same, but check here http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_car_parts_catalogue_C01.php

I think the bolts are items 18 and 19, sliders are 13 and 15.

If you want the Honda part number, remove "_pfk" from the Lings URL. Prices shown on Lings are the current Honda price and include VAT.

If you call HH and say you are a member of TA then they will give 10% discount and postage is free.

HH = Holdsworht Honda, they are in the Afiliates section of the forum.

Those bolts are a bit odd (***uming they are item 18 in freddofrog's post), in that they have a 12mm AF head with a 'not quite' M8 thread. An M8 thread would normally have a 13mm AF, so when I recently needed one (because one of the hex heads was rounded) I bought a regular 13mm AF bolt. It doesn't fit... buy one from Honda.

If your sure its not the calipers that have seized, It's almost certain that you will find you have corrosion under the sliders, which is forcing the slider up and essentially trapping the pad against the disc once the calliper has released. I've had this on the rear callipers of all 4 Hondas I have owned, including my 2003 Type S tourer. The best way to cure this is to remove the calliper carrier and use a wire brush on a drill or Dremel to really clean the flats of the carrier up. Also get yourself a new set of stainless steel sliders from brake parts.co.uk, lube it all up and your laughing.

That is good advice... I had to grind off the paint and casting marks at the widest point of the pads, in order to make them fit freely. The previous pads had jammed exactly as you describe, which had caused them to wear away. It makes me wonder how many inexperienced mechanics/owners might replace the caliper in error?

Thanks for all the advice guys. The original bolt was rounded slightly so could not be removed with my bi-hex socket set. I had heard about 'flank drive' sockets which could get round the issue of removing the problem bolt. I borrowed a couple of flank drive sockets from work and the bolts came out a treat :) I then removed the carrier and cleaned up, there was a huge amount of crud under there. I have replaced slider plates but unfortunately have had to re-use the bolts as Honda had none in stock. I thought I had been clever by getting some M8 x 22 long stainless steel bolts from work but as stated the thread on the correct bolts is not a true M8.. Anyway have ordered some new bolts and will fit them in the next week or so. Brakes seem okay and not scalding hot.

Thanks again
