I am generally very pleased with my recently purchased W reg 2.0l Type V Auto, however, I have found on a couple of occasions now that it does not like reversing uphill. It feels as if the brakes are coming on after a few feet. Stopping and starting again allows a little more progress, but things are definitely not as they should be. I have had a look online and found some folks with similar problems, though mostly in the States. Has anyone here encountered this problem? If so, what course of action would you suggest?

Sorry for the bad news mate, but the Auto box on the 6th is a known problem. Reversing up hill, what happens? Does the car struggle? Feel like the clutch is slipping if you were driving a manual?

Apologies for the delayed reply, I've just finished watching a somewhat disappointing Olympic road-race! When I try to reverse uphill the car will go for a few yards and then begin to feel like the handbrake is being progressively applied until, despite giving it more accelerator, the car comes to a halt. It doesn't feel like a slipping clutch at all, more like the engine is having to work against an increasingly heavy load. Initially I thought that the brakes were somehow binding in reverse. If I come off the accelerator and try again I am able to go for a few more yards. It's almost as though there is a forward gear selected as well as reverse. I have had a look on the internet and have come across a few threads that mention the possibility of a faulty solenoid and there was something about reverse and fourth gear sharing the same clutch?

Mike im with Si on this sorry to say.Your best bet is have your transmission oil changed if not already done. This might improve this problem.

The auto box in the 6th is pretty much the only one that was sold in America  Yanks don't like changing gear, or as they call it, 'driving stick'

If i'm honest i'm not 100% sure when it comes to the auto box, but if i were you i'd change the fluid, nice and cheap to do, but only use Honda recomended fluids, see if that helps, if not, you might have to take the car to a specialist.

The Auto box on the 6th gens is really their only weak point, but if they go, then they're not cheap to repair/replace. A reconditioned auto box will set you back about £600 for the part then you have to take into consideration the labour for the garage to fit it.

Again i'm really sorry that my reply hasn't been the most positive. :(

Thanks for the reply; I changed the ATF pretty much as soon as I got the car, though to tell you the truth, the stuff that came out seemed a good colour and there was very little material stuck to the drain plug. I used Honda fluid for the change and didn't notice the problem until I had been driving the car for a couple of weeks. I think I might look for a second-hand box; £600 is two-thirds of what I paid for the car. I will also try to be a bit more vigilant about when the problem occurs - I have a feeling it's worse when the engine is hot. I'll also try to see if there are any problems with the lock-up in fourth gear - I haven't noticed whether or not it's happening yet. I'll let you know how I get on.

A quick update; I tried reversing uphill with the engine (and gearbox) cold this morning, and discovered that the car behaved completely normally, so it seems that this phenomenon only occurs when the system is hot.

To be honest mate i'm at a total loss.

I don't know what's causing the problem or how to fix it. If it works fine when cold as opposed to hot though, i'd have ***umed that its an expansion issue you have. But as i've said i can't help. Sorry dude.
