accord type r
hi guys i am new on here but just wondered if anyone could help me , i have a 2000 (w) Accord Type R that has developed a bit of a nagging problem to me. When the car has warmed up i get this annoying rattle at 2000 rpm what i can only describe as sounding like a diesel it then goes off at about 2500 rpm, the performance of car is not affected although it does seem to do it more accelerating up a bank. i just want it fixed before i sell it on, any help appreciated many thanks

is this a heat shield come loose, I had it on a rover recently. Worth checking as it rattles at lower revs without effecting the performance. ;)

As robert has said pal, inspect the exhaust system and take it from there. More than likely it's a heat shield.

Hi pal no that was my first part i checked, got service done yesterday and my pal said it was my induction kit loose which i knew it wasn't got it back and still the same, might have to drain the gearbox and replace oil see if anything is in there, its driving mad, noise is not that bad but you know when its there and you want it fixed if you know what i mean.

What's the milage on the car?

When you say a diesel noise, do you mean that your car actually sounds like it has a diesel engine in it, or just the rattle is something that you'd expect from a diesel? It sounds like a pretentious question but there is a difference.

Could be piston slap? What's the condition of the oil like, and what's the service history like on the car? What induction kit do you have? When was the last time the tapets were adjusted?

Lots of questions i know, but without hearing the noise it's hard to find the correct solution. So the more info we have the easier it'll be for us to help :)

IIRC, the TypeR has an hydraulic timing belt tensor, which are known to fail.
That could very well be the problem.

Can you pinpoint the noise location? If it comes from the timing belt area, I would bet on it.
If so, I would change it for a "normal" tensor, which is possible to install on the TypeR.

Is this the noise that you are experiencing?
This is how a failed tensioner looks in a engine like the one in the TypeR(or very similar), an H22.

Actually, it's quite scary to look at that timing belt

Well, that one's had it!!!!!!!!

Gavin mate, if your car sounds ANY thing like that, get it to a garage ASAP mate!!!!!! Belt skips a tooth, not a disaster, belt skips 2 teeth, especially if in Vtec, WHOOPS!!!!

If it happens out of Vtec, the H22A7 has a non interferance system, so you should be fine, but in Vtec, well, springs, retainers etc. A valve snaps? Goes into the cylender, then it's pretty much game over.

So, when was the belt last done? Milage on the car? Did they replace the Auto tensioner, ***uming you still have the auto tensioner fitted? Lots of people, myself included have a manual one.

Not familiar with your engine but is the rattle at light throttle or just arounf 2k? It could be pinking, detonation...get your timing checked probably needs adjusting and try Shell V-power which is a higher octane. Hopefully just that and not your adjuster messing up or worn rings

hi pal many thanks for reply. The rattle does just sound like a diesel at 2000 rpm, i have a pipercross induction kit, god knows on the tappets, service history regular and just had oil changed it now has 113k on and timing belt was and tensioner changed at 57k by honda, so it ain't due yet but after that video posted it could be that , if you listen it has a kind of a diesel noise there

Hey you know you may have hit nail on the head only thing with mine is i cant replicate the noise when stationery mine only does it under a little bit load and at 2000rpm driving. stationery i get nothing, but hey the car is back in on monday, i hope you have solved my problem ill get back to you and let you know how i got on cheers Gav

It does sound like the tensioner has had it. :( As has been said they can fail, but it's not a huge problem. MY advice would be to get the car checked in for a cam belt change, and at the same time either put a manual tensior on the car, or get an NEW auto one put on. I've got a manual tensioner on mine. Was fitted by Andy at VtecDirect.

The cam belts are supposed to be done every 75K miles, so you're not far off needing a replacement mate, and always better to be safe than sorry. While the car is in the garage i'd recommend getting the VCs done at the same time. This will mean you won't have the car for 2 days as they can only be set once the engine is stone cold i.e left over night.

As i've said, if the belt slips out of vtec it 'shouldn't' be the end of the world as they have a non-interferance engine, but if it were to snap while in Vtec, chances are that'd be game over.

Get it changed mate, and you;ll have no worried about the engine for at least another 50K miles...provided the fluids and filters are changed regularly using the correct stuff B)

well guys my pal has just phoned me and said its my big end shells and not the timing belt adjuster, hopefully its not too bad as the noise is only at 200rpm and not all the time which is strange enough, many thanks on all your help, i shall post back in a couple of days with outcome, thanks gav

Unfortunately that can be an expensive job. Hopefully the crank isn't scored as don't think it is possible to machine the crank due to tolerances (or something).

As Shiny says mate, this can be an expensive problem to sort. Hope it doesn't cost too much.

Gavin, that seems to be bad news :(
Hope you manage to solve the problem without spending too much money

Any idea on how your friend identified the problem?

hi chaps it seems to be my big end shells not the mains thats at fault only 2 were worn, went to honda as they are a dealer part only and im waiting for a phone call as they needed some colour marks off them even though i took old ones in, typical. god knows how much they will be, i did see on his sheet a price and it looked like 20.67 gbp on the print out but i dont know if thats for 8 or each, its an absolute rip off if its each they look like s****ty bits of metal.

hi bud he had it for the day and took it out a few times and phoned me and said its your bottom end, it wasn't that bad im just picky, but i am wanting to sell car and would not want to sell it knowing something wasn't quite rite with it

Is it part 8 of the following diagram?
If so, can they be replaced without completely dismantling the engine, taking only the bottom part?

That's expensive :(

Maybe its worth to try aftermarket, although it's now easy to be sure they will fit:

BTW, remove the "_pfk" from the url to get the honda parts number B)

many thanks for that, im struggling with my local honda garage they told me i need the numbers off crank and off the big end rods and still getting nowhere with them, my con rods say G2 on them im fed up

hi chaps just had email back japserviceparts.co.uk and said they can do a full set of mains , con and thrust bearings and they are taiho same as honda original for 59.99 delivered, and said they are standard size and as long as my crank has not been reground they will fit, what does that sound like lads? to good to be true or not, bearing in mind my honda local stealership said they can only get me 4 on monday for 96.72 and another 4 at the end of august.

That does sound very cheap to me, and if it were my money then i'd go with the dealers.
