Vibration that come and go

Hi all,

My car has started to develop an odd issue.....I've searched the forums and can't find anything like it.

On the motorway yesterday the car started vibrating through the steering wheel. Started mild, then went mental. I pulled over as the steering felt funny as well so I though I had a puncture or a weight had fallen off the rim.....but there was nothing.

So I rejoined the motorway and at 70mph it started again. After a few more miles it stopped vibrating and was smooth.....

On the return journey after about 10 minutes on the motorway - same thing. Mild vibration building to crazy, then goes after 5 or so minutes.

Any ideas?......

Loose/missing wheel nut(s)?

toffie_pie will probably be along soon to tell you it's a knackered driveshaft... he might be right!

I was thinking (and hoping it's not) the drive shaft.

Could some part of the suspension make it go like this?

I'm dropping it off at the garage tomorrow.....just good to get an idea of what it might be.

FWIW - it could be the tyres. If one of them has developed a flat spot (i.e. not symmetrically round). You'll notice this on different surfaces at at different point of the road, heat, etc.

Test? Pump them hard, e.g. whatever the upper limit is for the car (on my 2.4 it was 38 psi). If the problem is lessened, guess what?
