Due to a situation beyond my control I had to leave the car for four weeks standing on the drive, no special precautions taken just locked it and left it. When I came to start it today the battery had insufficient power to start the engine. Am I expecting too much?? as I say the alarm system was blinking and no doubt other things were happening. Should I have disconnected? and has anyone else found this to be usual.

I would expect it to be flat, as you say alarm and other onboard computers will draw current and older batteries will be worse.

I've always have joy with even the cheapest booster packs to get it going again (if its just drained) but you might want to investigate if they have enough punch for a diesel. TBH I'd be bringing the battery in for a charge from the AC rather then let your alternator take the strain after a long time standing.

My battery lasted over 5 years in the car, but it was never left longer than a week between start ups, but as to how long a battery should last in between start ups, it depends on its condition really, batteries have a "health" meter which can be checked with specialist equipment nowadays.

my one has been there longer than that, now on charge in the garage, I think next time I have to let it stand for a week or two I will disconnect.

I am sure my car (2004 ex) is on the same battery, i have had it run down flat a few times after leaving it vacant.

Brian left a good tip, just pop open the bonnet, lock the car as normal.

disconnect battery, shut bonnet.

obv no alarm will function but the car is locked.

prob not the safest of methods but depending on where you live might be sufficent.
