Hello

Can you recommend a good bike rack to stick two bicycles onto read door of an estate 5 door Honda Accord (Model: "2.2 i-DTEC EX Tourer 5dr (08 - 09)")?

We have two bicycles. I think putting them on the roof would be hard to get them on and off, plus it would waste fuel. So I want something that is dead-easy to attach to the car, and dead easy to attach 2 bikes onto.

Many thanks

J

I use a Thule velo compact 927 which carries 3 (or 4 with an adapter)

Brilliant at carrying 2 as you can space them out well. Tilt function works like a charm and it doesn't affect mpg too much.

They're not cheap but they work flawlessly and take seconds to fit and remove with no tools.

I used to think roof racks were a faff till I gave them a go on my BMW 1 series and since then I’ve been converted. I used the Thule rack and it’s a doddle getting them on; grab the bikes by the fork and seat tube and it slots straight in. I never liked the idea of having an overhang at the rear and wheel protruding out the sides of the car. And as for fuel economy, it was when I was single and the 3 litre straight six was music to my ears!!

Just a word of warning. Thule do not recommend using a tailgate mounted bike rack on the Accord Tourer. I think this is because the tailgate is plastic and they are not designed to carry the extra weight. There have been cases of hinges detaching from plastic tailgates on other cars when used with a bike rack.

I use a tow ball mounted rack, although my son uses a Thule roof rack which, as mentioned above, is very quick and secure.

For roof mounts, just... don't drive into your garage with your bikes on top. If you have a garage door opener in the car, put it out of reach in the back of the car. Too may friends of mine have had very expensive momentary lapses.

The Thule velo compact 927 looks lovely but it's £467.25 (halfords) - that's more than my bike cost!
I still don't much like roof mounted bike racks because they will be noisy and waste fuel... plus I still can't imagine how to get the bikes onto the roof with a lot of hassle.

Fwiw, I don't mind having to unload the bikes before getting into the rear of the car to add/remove luggage (or access via the back doors!).

EDIT:
- How well do towbar mounted bike racks work in general? Don't they just bounce around rather a lot?
- Or are rear/tailgate mounted bike racks more stable?
- Also how hard are any of the above to remove the rack itself?

I think I do have a towbar/"tow ball"? for the car somewhere - if not I suppose I could always buy a new one if necessary.

Towball mounted bike racks are very secure. Mine is a cheap one (about £25) which clamps to the towball and is then further secured by a metal link. I have carried two mountain bikes at motorway speeds without the slightest movement. The rack takes less than a minute to attach/detach to or from the car, and about five minutes to attach and secure the bikes to the rack. Once removed from the car it folds so it can be easily stored in the boot.

As I stated previously, I would not recommend a tailgate mounted rack on the Tourer tailgate.

If you don't have a have a tow bar a roof mounted rack is probably the cheapest option.
