hi all my accord type r has always pinked at any speed and light throttle. i have tried different fuels but no difference all would be 95 ron but use maxol e5 from time to time.i use 10w30 semi synt oil?? there also is a intermittent flat spot normally at low speeds low gears and it might chug once then not happen for a month. and when car is warm after a drive restarting is hard it feels very lazy like a flat battery but have fitted a new battery got starter motor reconed and does not seem to make any better. does anyone think there problems are all related or 3 different problems. changed the spark plugs last year but never gaped them left alone and t belt was done by the previous owner so many ideas going through my head any help or ideas would be great thanks all
nope never did the valve clearances are they adjustable or hydraulic?? the engine mgt light is not on so not sure if the knock sensor is faulty. might try a set of leads and check and gap plugs and will look into doing valve clearences
Yea, im pretty sure they are adjustable John mate.
Although not a type R, heres a video on how to do it. I would get it into a decent honda dealer personally, should be about £50 to sort I would have thought. And it MUST BE DONE when the engine is cold so perhaps drop the car off the previous day for them to do in the morning or something.
I would check you have the correct grade spark plug first and that its gapped correctly, also a original set of leads because aftermarket ones can cause probs even good ones like magnecor etc.
The valves need to be checked and adjusted every 25k at least on the k20 it is.
Like others have said it could be the knock sensor, also try Shell v-power or 99ron fuel from empty.
As has already been suggested check your valve clearences. It really is a VERY simple job to do. The hardest part is removing the trim near the crank pully. Just make sure the engnie is cold. I put a how to on here somewhere.
Also i'd suggest changing the oil for something like a 5-50 fully synth. If it's pinkning then it's probably something like the clearances or maybe the timing. When was the timing belt last done? And have you checked to see that both arrows point the same direction?
Also while you've got the tools out it's definatly worth checking and cleaning the EGR plate AND valve. Easy 45min job too.
If you've had the right spark plugs fitted you dont need to worry about 'gapping' them as they will only go in so far. When they're nipped up tight, that's where they should be.
the t belt was replaced 30 k ago by previous owner so prob should check the marks out ?? will do the valve clearances too could that be why its very lazy to start when hot?? looks like i have a busy weekend coming up soon any other ideas directions be a great help cheers
The TypeR engine is a DOHC, so its a bit different. This one is not a Accord TypeR but its a Honda DOHC, it gives you an idea of where to the feeler gauge and how to do it.
Just re-read this thread and you dont mention what plugs you've fitted.
Just remember to have a go at the EGR plate and valve. A lot of times this actually cures problems. Is there any hesitation in accelerating at low speeds (5-15mph) when cold?
yeah cleaned the egr and plate a few months ago so that should be ok there is a slight hesitation in low gears at low speeds but drives fine nobody else notices it just me will try the valve clearances at weekend and go from there i suppose.
Use V-power or the like as the H22A7 doesn't like normal 95 (even face lifts). Give her some general TLC like VC's, EGR plate & valve. Then reset the ECU, let it idle with no throttle until the cooling fans kick in and then thrash her. If your not using any or much oil then 5W-40 will be fine. Fully synth only. If its uses a bit more then use 10W-50.
This may sound like a silly question but what is pinking? and Toyracer69 you cant get V-Power fuel over here. A company called Topaz bought all the Shell and Statoil Garages and merged them under the Topaz name. In fact I dont believe any of the Petrol Stations in this country offer anything other than the standard fuel. I am open to correction on this, nobber maybe you could confirm? One of the many joys of living in an anti car state like Ireland
Well one thing first, have you any hidden engine codes that stated pinking? (aka knock sensor) or is it in fact a misfire?
The H22a7 is a pain in the *** about that, but i do run WITHOUT the platinum sparks, only maintain the heat range of the plug (H22 normal copper plug) and had no trouble whatsoever!
In fact is better like that, you can play a little with the gap to compensate the gas type and/or heat outside...but is better to let a pro do that kind of stuff!
As for the valve clearance that will be easy to do and MUST be done at least every 2 years (do mine every year). Keep in mind that this is a top end engine, with hi rev and power, you must do allot more maintenance and check-up´s than a oil change.
