Hi - back to the much discussed engine oil!
I have booked in next Monday for a service which includes 0w/30 oil and a genuine honda oil filter.
However, it was serviced 8k miles ago using 5w/30. I read that this is a big NO,NO and am concerned! It's like googling a stomach ache and an hour later you're convinced you've got a terminal illness lol
Can someone please tell me why it's not a good choice and what effect/damage it has on the car and will changing back to 0/30 sort of save it???
Thanks
Andy

I wouldn't worry too much. Here in Portugal, the owners book say we can use 5-30 too. 0-30 is better, but you should be ok.

A 0w30 is thinner at colder temperatures which allows it to pass through all the channels and fully lubricate the engine. At operating temps the viscosity of 0w30 and 5w30 are the same.

That's my understanding of it.

Andy, 5w/30 or 40 won't kill the engine but Honda's revised recommendation to all their dealers is to use 0w/30 in this engine. The few engine failures we've seen have had some oil change inconsistencies behind them and it's the most vital thing in your engine so just try and stick to 0w/30.

Nuno, Portugal presumably has a different (and I ***ume higher temperature) climatic condition so 5w/30 is probably as good as using 0w30 in the UK.

Andy i can't add much more the guys have covered it and give good advice

I have had my i CDTi serviced at the same Honda main dealer since new (Sept 2007) and they always use fully synthetic Shell 5-30w Ultra oil, I have questioned this a couple of times and they ***ure me that it is recommended by Honda UK for all their diesel engines!

So far 89,000 trouble free miles!

5-30 isn't too bad; still wrong though

Tell them to check with Honda, their info is wrong.

As said before, 5w/30 is ok, but not the best for your engine.

Guys just to clarifier this my good friend has is own garage and on his data base it dose say 5w/30 is ok to use.
But the 1st one on the list is 0w/30 so basicley the latter is an alternative if you cant get it.
So in a nut shell guys why trade for 2nd best when you can have the best its just false economy in my books.

Just my 2 (euro) cents - when I bought my beauty she probably had some kind of thicker oil (the previous owner was an Italian :( ) because once she was serviced with 0w30 my turbo started whining when cold. Given the price of a new turbocharger I would not risk damaging it by using a bit cheaper oil.

Damn it.....................Just changed my oil yesterday. After reading a previous post put 5 litres of Castrol Edge 5w-30 in my beloved CL9. I'm sure it will be okay, but please please guys make up your minds. Is it 0w-30 or 5w-30

Definately 0w-30, and also 5.9 Litres not 5.

CL9 is a petrol engine and 5w30 is perfectly fine. We're talking about the CN range of diesels.

Hi Simo - my turbo already whistles (more when cold) with 5w/40 - hope 0w/30 won't affect it?????
Andy

Turbo whistle when cold is fine guys, perfectly normal. It shouldn't be a whine however.

 you wait till the little shi. I mean darling gets to 2. :D. O am bushed!

She was born last sat morning, finally got some decent sleep last night. Well I say decent, I mean more than 1/2 hour at a time.

Well congratulation's !

The next three months you will never remember , but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Give our best wishes to your good lady, hope all settles down for you both soon

Congratulations buddy. Not that you want to hear it, but these are the easy times  my little dude slept through from week one. But he more than makes up for it during the day... Punched the missus square in the eye this morning. I had to leave the room so that he didn't see me wet myself laughing  bloody good shot! Glad if weren't me

I'll drink to that. I still like to watch mine sleeping. You can gauge how much fun they've had during the day by how little they've moved after they've dropped off. Just like Puppa

My turbo is definitely whining (siren-like), not whistling which as F6HAD said is normal. As for the oils my uneducated guess is that 5w40 adversely affects the engine (at least mine it has) - when I bought the car she was quieter and no turbo whining but that was before I serviced her with 0w30. I think the thicker oil (5w40) has put more pressure and more wear on the engine so now the thinner oil (0w30) cannot compensate and fill the gaps hence the noisier engine and whining turbo.

Simo, what mileage is your car on and what is the general climate (temperature range) in Bulgaria?

It's possible the thicker oil was disguising, rather than putting pressure on the turbo..

F6HAD, my car is just over 200k km. The temperature range in Bulgaria is quite wide - in the winter it might get as cold as -20C and in the summer it would jump to +40C.
Now for the turbo What I meant was that in the beginning the thicker oil put pressure and wear on the turbo and it was consequently disguised by the very same thickness of the oil.

I am struggling to express what I mean. Hope you get it somehow.

I do understand what you mean mate, but 5w/40 is not that much thicker. What is more likely is that your turbo (***uming its still the orignal turbo) is now on around 125k miles and if the car has not run on 0w/30 from the start, those harsh winters may have meant the turbo bearings have not had optimum lubrication on cold start and this has caused some wear.

If it gets better once the engine has warmed up and there are no other signs of wear such as oil consumption then I would just live with it until you need to replace the turbo.

isn't the consensus that worn turbos on diesels are really bad idea due to the potential for "running on" and destroying the engine? There are some spectacular videos on youtube of diesels effectively destroying themselves due to worn turbos "feeding" the engine with its own lubricating oil to the point of total destruction.
