I hope this post isn't too similar to the one next to it but i am so keen to find out about this .
OK I have virtually bought a 2000 2.0 L se exec AUTO @67k on the clock ( private buy ,the guy is holding on to it till 22nd till his new car arrives) , now I am worried after reading ALL OVER THE NET about the auto box going bad . I also see (according to posts in other forums and sites that Honda have extended the warrant on the cars from 1998 2002 . do any of you know what the situation is with regard to this warranty , I mean if I thought I was going to have to replace a gearbox sometime down the road id not buy the car . The car has an extensive Honda dealer service history and is seriously minted throughout for its age so I really really want this motor but now I'm undecided .

Any help / advice / information is greatly appreciated .

Not being funny, but honda normally extend warranties for about 7 years or 100k (up to).

Doesn't look like the warranty will cover you for as 2000 car as the 7 years will have expired.

Having said that

This is just my personal opinion, but if it was me, and I'd found a minter I liked with good service history, there was no sign of the problem on the test drive, and I was only paying £1300, then for that money I would take the risk. Life's too short.

I have had my 1999 1.8 auto ES for about 2 years now. It had 75000 on the clock when I bought it with full Honda service history. The autobox still works like new with absolutly no problems whatsoever! I changed the transmission fluid a month or so ago and the magnetic sump plug had hardly anything on it (metal bits).

I shouldnt worry about what you read on the net as the only info you will see on the subjects you are looking for will be from people with problems looking for advise. The amount of results you find online are in no comparison to the amount of auto accords that are on the roads.

Worrying unduly here I think . I agree , whatever car you buy will have folk researching problems. I will contact my local honda dealer anyway and let you know what they say . I,m not sure why but it seems to be more talked about in USA .

Cheers guys

Because the yanks only really by autos probably.

Go for it Tan i told you it was best putting a thread hear.
Now go and get the minter and enjoy :)

Also its worth mentioning that as it has a full honda service history like mine, part of the service includes them checking the differential for excessive wear on the auto box. So if there were any problems there you should have some form of documentation.

For your own piece of mind, get yourself 3 litres of Z1 ATF and a new sump plug washer from honda and change the fluid. Its easy enough to do but make sure you do it on level ground and dont over fill it. That way, you will see if there is excessive wear by looking at the magnetic sump plug!

3 litres of Z1 ATF I shall get , You guys are tops .

Thanks once more, I will keep you posted ,roll on 22nd .

Thanks , Timing belt done at last service .
I found a lovely article on Wikipedia on the Honda Accord history and according to this the SE executive was built in Swindon for the European market . Forgive me if you all already knew this .
It also seems that the automatic tranny issue was apparent in the American built cars only mainly the V6 , again if these facts are wrong , my apologies . I am in the process making sure the car I am about to buy is as sound as a pound tranny wise .So far the information I have gathered is convincing . I phoned 2 Honda dealerships who both told me they have not heard of issues or recalls with this transmission .

Heres the link just in case anyone wants to read it . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Accord

EDIT............ phoned another Honda dealer and he says this transmission fault is in America only . He emphasized a point that a fellow poster told me above , the ratio of faults with Honda's compared to the vast amounts produced is tiny . Main thing he told me was to strip the brakes and grease them once a year as they are prone to gathering dust .

Cheers

I think that the gearbox on the 2.0 Auto is different to the one on the ATV. By this i mean that it was made in a different factory from different parts, and therefore there were not as many faults of this recorded.

I remind myself of a newly installed firewall , starts of annoying then quietens down to a purr , the purr of a honda .
OK i,m quiet for a bit purr purr .

I have 2 6th.Gen autos. The first one is a 2000 2.0 SE Exec which I bought in 2003 with 43K on the clock. I found out later it had a replacement gearbox fitted at 28K by Honda but I don't know what was wrong with the original. Anyway that car now has 83k on the clock & it is going fine. Once or twice a year it sometimes "clunks" but it's usually when in a car park & parking & I think it's the electronics getting the wrong gear. Anyway I'm not worried about it. The other 6th.gen is a 2001 type-v which I bought last year & that seems just fine. I wouldn't worry about an auto.

IMHO, my 1990 Accord has a far better auto box than the 6th.gen ones although that is the 2nd.box it's had. The first one did 109k before really sounding wounded but we kept it going to destruction for another 2k & then put in an autobox from a scrapped later accord. My 1990 Accord has now covered 145k....

Best Regards...

I change cars a lot and I won't hang on to the honda till its in the 100k,s (currently 67k) , if i take it up to around 80k I will sell it on . don't get it till monday btw . I will see how the fuel consumption goes over the months also , I currently drive a big diesel french thing( citroen grand c4 semi auto 10 plate ) that returns 50 - 55mpg but as boring and ugly as it gets .
Thanks for that Ian , all depends if I was a glass half full or half empty person how to interpret your post , on one hand its positive then its gets negative twice but i get the idea .

Sorry for it seeming that way! What I'm trying to say is I'm happy with the autoboxes on my cars. In 2003 the autobox went on the 1990 Accord & the 2000 Accord was bought to
replace it. My wife insisted as it failed when she was driving it. After I bought the 2000 2.0 I was worried that the gearbox might fail because of what had happened & I'd read on the net about honda autoboxes. Made even worse by subsequently finding out that the autobox had been replaced at 28k. Anyway it's been fine & the car has now done 83k. And I did buy another auto in the type-v :) There was nothing actually wrong with the 1990 Accord apart from the gearbox so I replaced it with one out of a scrap accord & we ended up with 2 Accords.

It says a lot about Honda engineering that all cars have not really cost me a lot to maintain/repair over the years. Anything that needed doing has been done but there hasn't been a lot.
The 1990 one is currently in a bodyshop for the first time in 20 years having some rust looked at. I can remember when 3year old cars were rust buckets......

Ha ha , I think he knows the car I'm buying and trying to put me off so he can move in , just kidding .

3 Honda dealerships can't be lying , none of them heard of this supposed auto tranny fault in UK , gave them all the VIN and this car has never been recalled . roll on Monday , Oh and I want a type accord sticker .

Great that you have done 92k and no bother ,my confidence soars again .

Ok then looks like ive got a runt then as mine has done 122500 miles and the box is slipping in 2nd then does a little kangaroo after about 45 mins off driving and losses all gears bar 1st oil is clear ish and correct level and when I put in gear from n to d4 I get a big jerk but doesnt creep forward, so at weekend im going to replace oil and c wot that does

Got the car on Tuesday. Gearbox is smooth. Drives like a new car. Smell the leather yet. Paint is perfect albeit a bit dull i think they looked after it and washed it well but didnt polish it so a day on the clay, resin and sealer is needed ( got good advice in another post about getting the car shiny) . I am delighted with this honda Accord. Its had 3 auto
Atic transmission fluid changes BTW.

Great news bud!
