I was driving home from work today and my near side rear brake was grinding away whenever I braked.

Unfortunately as it was late I couldn't look at it myself so I just dropped it off at the garage for them to look at tomorrow. I wouldn't have had a clue what I was looking at anyway.

I don't think it is as simple as a stone stuck between the disc and pad as I think that would be making a noise at all times. Fingers crossed it's not too expensive anyway!
 
If it's grinding only when you brake then it could be the metal wear indicator on the pads making contact with the disc - in which case new pads and the job's a good 'un!

I had new rear discs and pads 20k ago, would rear pads wear out that quickly?
 
It's possible - Accords do have a reputation for being heavy on pads and discs

It's an admin job but don't worry it's not just you it's happened a lot recently
 
I've just looked at what I paid last time for pads, £25 - even if they charge me an hours labour I can accept that. I just hope it's not a caliper, that was over the ton for a refurb :eek:
 
A squealing brake pad is going to be a worn pad. The rears shouldn't have gone after only 20K miles though.

At worst it'll be a seized caliper. This is a simple fix too. Only the slider pins out, get them greased and then that's it. So either way it shouldn't be a huge bill.

Why not try to DIY?? The chances are the mechanics will just whip out the old pads and throw in the new ones. Ideally, the mating surfaces should be checked, cleaned and lubricated for best performance.
 
If it had still been light til 10 or a Friday I would have given it a go myself, but I needed my car on the road so it had to go to a garage.

According to them it was a seized caliper, they fixed that and replaced the pads. Pads were £25 but by the time labour and vat was added it came to £90 :eek:

Very annoying really as the old pads were only 20k old and everything was fine 8k ago at it's last service.
 
That job should take less than an hour. How can they justify charging you £65 for the labour?
 
They charged £50 labour, they supposedly checked the fronts and had a look around the car to warn me of anything coming up in it's next service (due next month). Then vat to the robbing tax man.
 
That's flaming outragous!!!!!! I'd be really miffed if i'd payed that much. Did they tell you what they checked?
 
They said they checked the front brakes, and I mentioned that it still hesitates to start occasionally (they couldn't find anything).

Plus, I did just drive in at half 6 on Monday and give them the keys and their diary did look full for the Tuesday. I expected to pay a little bit for that.

What is the going rate for labour nowadays then? I have been going to this garage for the last 8 years and I have always thought that they were a good mix of reasonable prices for quality work.

I have now asked my father-in-law-to-be to show me how to replace brake pads though so that I know for when the fronts need doing!

Always got a lot of respect for people who work on their own cars!

I pay £35 an hour for labour at my local trusted mechanic. Places like Kwikfit usually charge anything from £40-£60 pph.

But then again, if they're a trusted place and you can always rely on them to do a proper job and have never had a problems with them, their customer service or their wait for parts etc, then i suppose paying a little more for the extra piece of mind is nothing to worry about.

Think i must just have gotten lucky with my trusted mechanic. B)
