HID Earth Electrodes - Up or Down ?!

Having completed an install of 6000K HID's at the weekend I have become aware of two small shadows in front of the car which further (google) research suggests is due to the earth electrodes pointing up in the bulb holder when they should be pointing down.

Having tried to rectify this tonight I ran into the further problem that the bulb holders only allow them to be installed one way ie. earth electrode facing upward and that some modification may be required to allow switching around (with a Dremel or such).

I haven't read anything about this on here so has anyone tried to carry out this modification to the bulb holder and if so how did you achieve it and a "shadowless" solution ?!!

Thanks

Cheers

Brett,
Thanks for the point in the right direction.

From what I've been reading here >> http://www.passatworld.com/forums/68-b5-garage/301826-way-do-i-put-my-hid-bulbs.html these owners suggest the electrode should face down in projector lenses to avoid the shadows we are all experiencing ?!

Cheers

To be honest mate you dont want to be taking a dremel to your lights. They go that way up for a reason.

I have the same issue and noticed it at first but after a few weeks of getting used to it i don't any more and just enjoy the extra light. When i use my Passat which has halogen lights i feel like i have sun glasses on at night compared to the Accord.

This problem must come from where you get the bulbs! I drove 180 mls last night and did not notice the shadow, after reading about this problem I went out early this morning ( to fuel up ) and could not see any shadow to speak of. I paid around £50 for my set from hids - direct, maybe paying more gives you a better chance of less shadow intrusion!

It ain't just me...more posts on another different users forum here >> http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?18773-HID-shadow-in-light-pattern-*solved* in addition to the VW one posted above.

My investigations will continue unabated......it is minor but nonetheless annoying so needs to be fixed

get the bulbs out slightly bend the electrodes to any side, just a little and this will fix the issue :) done this plenty of times

J4JAV,

Will they not break ?! The electrode is wire at the top but ceramic fixed into the plastic base so it will only move at a slight angle. Are you sure ?!

I haven't heard this before but double check with Jav.On that note he is a very good reliable source and always spot on.

yep you can do it but be very gentle, don't touch the bulb, just with finger nail tip touch the silver end on the electrode and gentle move it not too much, just as much as it will allow. if you dremel then it still won't fit as the H1 has a special fitment with the two raised spots which sit in to hold the bulb place, also dremel could leave dust in your headlamp and will make it look bad :(

Hi J4JAV,

Do you have any before and after pics that I can follow (for both the electrode and light beam pattern) ?

PS. I know you said you have done this many times are you a mechanic ?

Hi,

I have recently purchased a set of 6000k HIDs and trawled through the various HID threads. Did you remove the headlights as suggested in Cliffs thread or did you manage to change the bulbs etc in stu? Could you tell me which route you took to install the upgrades?

Hi MeatyChi,

I removed the headlights and I don't believe it is possible to replace the OE bulbs with HID bulbs - and ***ociated kit - without doing this although I believe some have ?

It is fairly easy to do even for a rank amateur like me ;-)

Good luck !!
