Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my 6th gen, the front end wobbles and shudders when brakeing (at any speed) and pulling off at low speed, it sounds like warped discs to me  , but i got told it could be brake calipers sticking or the wheel bearing gone  . I've only just got new tyres on the car and had my tracking done too but it seems tracking is out again as its pulling to the left again :(

Please could you help me

Hi
Depending on good you are with the spanners I would maybe get the wheel off and inspect the discs and also check the pads for uneven wear. Also if you changed the pads yourself how hard was it to compress back the brake piston?
Another cause could be a seized slider pin. All these checks will require stripping down the brakes and inspecting. However only do this if you are confident with the spanners and know what you are doing?
Hope that helps

If it shudders while braking, it should be warped disks, still, you could have a binding calliper, making the disk to overheat and warp...

You try something without any tools. After you drive the car for a while and without hard braking, check if any of the wheels is much hotter than the other. If so, you might have a binding calliper... Be careful, don't burn your self B)

Hi Just done that after picking up my boy had a look at the front passenger discs and pads and noticed that the pad is constantly on the disk ive only had the car 5 months and the previous owner changed the pads himself

we have noticed a slight noise on the brakeing system but when i got into the car for work this morning (6.30am) it was really bad, when i have the window down and radio off i can hear a tinging sound as if metal against metal every revolution of the wheel yet yesterday about 4.30pm when i last used it, it was fine :S

checked the wheels and they are all cold  and touched the front disks (wowser they are hot lol)

Judder felt through the brake pedal and steering wheel normally points towards a front brake/wheel problem, while judder felt thru the brake pedal and car (but not the steering wheel) normally points towards the rears. Pulling to one side would also direct me to suspect the fronts first. However a shudder shouldn't really knock your wheel alignment out - perhaps it's pulling to one side simply because a brake on that side is partially stuck on.

As you reckon its the fronts then firstly eliminate warped tyre or wheel - which you probably already have as they wouldn't balance properly when you had the new tyres fitted. ( I ***ume the problem was there before and after the new tyres). Secondly, as a previous poster mentioned, after a run check if a brake disc is hotter than the other - if so then the hot one's your culprit. The next thing I'd do would be jack the car up and spin each wheel by hand. If one has a "stcky" bit then 90% chance that's a warped disc, but if one is "sticky" all round then it would point towards a sticky caliper. While you've got it jacked check each wheel for movement left/right and in/out at the top/bottom. If there's any movement there it would point towards a wheel bearing or perhaps something with your suspension arms or ball joints, although I don't reckon this would give you judder. If you diagnose a sticky caliper you don't necessarily need to fit a new one - it's often a slightly rusty bit on the piston itself. If you're competent enough (and I dont mean to be derogitory there) the you can strip the pads off and clean the pistons up using emery cloth or similar.

Hope this helps :)

That'll be warped front disks mate. Will be a good idea to replace them as soon as you can. Will also be a good idea to replace the pads at the same time. Old pads plus new disk = problems.

Not too expensive to replace mate. Give Andy at VtecDirect a call. He'll be able to sort you out some disks and pads. Make sure you tell him it's a 6th gen 1.8 and not an ATR though. But he'll be able to give you a good price. And as you live in Wales, and doesn't take you too long to get to him in Winsford he'll be able to fit them too at a simply amazing price!!!!!!

Sounds like warped discs. Mine have gone like that, gonna get them sorted next month.

Btw another test for a seized caliper is to drive the car onto a slight incline in which you know will cause the car to roll backwards or forwards somewhat and then see if it does just that. A seized caliper will usually prevent a car from rolling.

Hey Guys

Just Changed my Front Pads and Discs only to find its the backs too :(  ,
the front drivers was warped but both discs were corroded and wasnt cleaned before the last pads were replaced, so the pads were unevenly worn cleaned all the calipers and springs as they were full of crud replaced only to find the tinging and now grinding from the backs had them off and the discs are badly corroded on the main disc area hence the grinding noise,

Well More To Pay out but at least it gets it done and safe :D

Sucks about it being the rears too, but as you've said at least you know what the problem is and you can get it sorted now.

Just tell her after it's done you won't have to change the pads for about another 20K miles and the disks should last another 70K. She'll be fine with it then  That's what i used to say anywho.

Well Just an update Done my Rears on Weds so the car had new discs and pads all round next is a service
(Self Service) Wish Me Luck :D
