I am having same problem. I think you need to first remove bolt that secures plastic housing around the tailgate button on bottom of tailgate. There is a little cover which exposes a star headed bolt. Remove this first. I did not have time to complete the job so i will let you know how I get on. If you have succeeded let me know how you did it, thanks Alex.
Mines a hatch, not sure if the same applys to saloons but...
1. Where the light sits, there is a small area you can get a flathead screwdriver into. Gently prise the light surround out and disconnect.
2. There will be two round covers on the section near the boot edge (Directly above you when the boot is open). For the left one, you push the inner part of the clip in, then lift the entire clip out with your trusty flathead. The right one will be a phillips screw hidden underneath a plastic hinge. Unscrew this, and it will allow you to remove the boot pull handle, which should slide outwards.
3. There are 3 pieces of trim that surround the top half of the window. You need to pull them off firmly, but gentle enough not to break them. Start with the one that surrounds the 3rd level brake light, and then remove the pieces either side.
4. You should now be able to remove the main trim piece. Again, you will need to pull firmly to remove this trim.
Be aware, some clips may fall out or remain in the "frame" while being removed. Simply slot them back into the trim. Also, be very careful when putting back the two pieces that surround the brake light. It is very easy to snap the corners.
