I get 40mpg cruising at 75mph on the motorway in my '07 2.0L Type S. In the city, with light traffic, I get 30, but if it's start-stop all the way, I'd be lucky to get 25. Car is regularly serviced and tyre pressures checked every weekend.

Thanks for all the pointers guys. I've decided to stick with the petrols - I don't think I'll be doing more than 10k a year, and lots of small runs, which if I understand correctly, is not good for the diesel engine in the long run. There's a nice black Type S 2.0L with just 25k on the clock...
