No, it's not that as there is no switching arrangement on my tow bar wiring. It seems the problem is a break in the wiring close to the hinge on the tailgate. Constantly opening and closing the gate has eventually caused the wire to break. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Using the full to full method I get about 39mpg with my Tourer when I'm running around on short journeys. Returning from France using nainly autoroutes I regularly get 56mpg.
