Good news! The light has gone out so I'm going to put it down to experience! How long does it store fault codes as I may ask my mechanic to have a look in the new year? Could it be anything to do with driving through lots of big puddles?

I have checked every fuse and they're all fine and the speedo is working again. Fault codes seem to be the only way to go so will check in the morning whether I have the port. Where is the port I stick the paper clip? Is that the obd port?
