As I said in my newbie post, my accord is being odd.

Yesterday the speedo stopped working and the engine light came on. Car was running fine.

Today the speedo is working fine as is everything else. Oil and fluids seem fine.

I am without the handbook so I'm not sure what this light could signify and what I should be checking?

It's a 1.8 vtec sport on a 51 plate so where should I be looking?

I'd suggest pulling error codes to see if any are stored. It's a two minute exercise once you've found a paperclip!

You need to find the connector (probably under the steering wheel somewhere), jump pins 4 and 9 with that paperclip and switch the ignition to "On". Count the flashes of the Check Engine Light. Long flashes are the first digit of the error code, short flashes the second. There'll be a pause, then it'll repeat over and over.

There's probably info on here somewhere, but have a look at this page for further info meantime:

Hi

Regarding the speedo issue, can you check fuses 6(15A) & 9(7.5A) in the drivers side panel fuse box

If your car has an ODBII port and can justify buying an ODB reader then it might be worth buying. Its a bit easier for reading codes, but before you buy one make sure you have the port in the passenger footwell, under the carpet tab near the centre console. Or else you will need to use the paperclip method as suggested (although the plug is under the glovebox kick panel)

I have checked every fuse and they're all fine and the speedo is working again. Fault codes seem to be the only way to go so will check in the morning whether I have the port. Where is the port I stick the paper clip? Is that the obd port?

Good news! The light has gone out so I'm going to put it down to experience! How long does it store fault codes as I may ask my mechanic to have a look in the new year? Could it be anything to do with driving through lots of big puddles?

Driving through lots of puddles is bad as it can throw water up in to all sorts of places that could then cause temporary or long term damage.

Keep an eye on it - try sitting still with engine running and give your keys a knock. That's also some of the symptoms of a dodgy ignition switch.
Hopefully just a bit of moisture getting in somewhere though, quite likely with the weather as it is currently!

Hopefully. The light has come on a couple more times lately. Only for a short period and with no effect on the drive itself but it's a niggly pain in the Harris!

Pesky light. Been on all morning round town. Car is idling at around 200 rpm and what seems like a coupla misfires at higher revs. Not all the time but a couple of times. Speedo has been intermittent too. Anyone had anything similar? Why do they always go when ya mechanic is on holiday till the new year?!

Can't say for certain when it was last serviced. Can't get codes read until the new year but what was an intermittent fault seems to have rapidly progressed to a continuous one. Could that be what the light means? Don't have the hand book so know idea what it could signify to have some idea where to look!

The light could mean anything in reality (see the link), although you would ***ume its a symptom of the issues you describe. The main issue with waiting is if a 2nd and 3rd fault occurred it would simply stack up behind it - the management light wouldn't reflect additional faults without reading then clearing previous ones.

The handbook doesn't list ODBII (at least I don't think it does) however Simon has thankfully complied a list for us.

You really should be servicing it every 8k - 10k miles or yearly (whatever is first). mine didnt have a stamp for a shocking 30k (I sure hope the previous owner simply forgot to get it stamped!).

As for the engine light, I recently had engine light trouble not long ago and it turned out it was caused when I serviced the car myself. At first it was obvious (and rather unusual), one of the HT leads kept popping out when setting off after a short while. The plugs were in tight but it seemed an extra crack on the ratchet done the trick. Anything like sparkplug related issues would and could explain the hideously low 200 RPM rating as my 1.8 idles at just over 500 RPM at it's lowest and even that is infrequent.
The engine light didn't disappear however and turned out that when removing cleaning the air box with a new air filter, it wasnt sitting correctly in the car. After alot of giffing about and some cursing, it was finally sat in properly and I havn't had the light on since. If you have tampered with the air box in any way, be aware it is a b*****d to put back into place properly.

I've not touched anything other than the fuses and the dip stick and that was after the fault occurred. However, the light has gone out and not come back since making a far greater effort to dodge puddles! Seems to have done the trick so I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope for the best. Was thinking of selling the car before this happened which, according to Sod's law is probably a factor.

We have now decided to keep her so I fully intend to have her serviced ASAP but am gonna stick with avoiding puddles for the time being. Now that Xmas is out the way i can afford to treat her a bit! Thanks for all the advice though. Gratefully received!
