    It's my MOT today

I always get nervous on MOT day. Both my cars are due around the same time so double stress. Good luck today!

    car tester

I'll do it! I have to send my bank details and a small cheque to an African prince to help him transfer some money (just doing him a favour, you understand). On the way to the post office I'll check out the car. Seriously, I agree with Dan. It would be different if someone was going along...

    Damp weather starting problem

I'm also a fan of a large blob of vaseline on my terminal. Remember though that its a petroleum-based product so it degrades latex rubber. Be careful where you put it fellas!

    Tourer brake issues and noises

I have a similar creaky noise on the almera. It happens on braking like yours but on the front right side. I've had it ages and it does seem to go away over the winter and come back when it gets warmer. Never been a problem with passing the MOT. Watching a recent wheeler dealers I think...

    Spark plugs

I think colour-wise it looks fine. That kind of brownish tan colour suggests the enigne and plugs are in pretty good condition. If they come out completely white or covered in oil, that's when you start to worry. Gap-wise I'd get a feeler gague out and adjust the gap if you're putting them...

    manifold! & Timing chain!

Good result on the manifold. £45 not bad if they'll do it under warranty, its amazing what a bit of banter will do sometimes! When I looked a couple of years ago it was £250 major / £125 minor service with free MOTs (not sure if they included aircon service) so that seems about right.

    Anniversary for SPUNIK

A quick google search shows that 250 000 miles is the approximate straight line distance from the earth to the moon! Sputnik has really earnt is name!

    manifold! & Timing chain!

Half hour labour? Make sure you enjoy as many complimentary cups of coffee as possible! (I only managed 1/4 before they came back with my manifold diagnosis).

Squeaking brakes but it's not the brake pads?

I'd deffo start with the copper grease, it'll only cost a couple of quid. Grease all the areas where the pads contact the caliper (but not the disc lol) and take it from there. Don't forget to grease the clips on the back of the pad where they touch the piston.

    Cheap diesel

Some good info there, Jake. I'm trying to sell the idea to Mrs Matt for her next car. Her dad was always doing crazy experiments in his shed so she's used to a bit of mad scientist shenanigans!

    Time for a change already

From the collective experience of myself and people I know, I firmly believe there are 'good' cars and 'bad' cars even within the same make and model. If you buy a car and start off with having to spend money on it, then sadly you have a bad car and it'll just be a money pit. A good car won't...

    Discs and Pads?

I hope you were sitting down when they gave you that quote! Like everyone else said, its a pretty easy DIY. I did mine at the roadside but this wet weather makes me wish I had a garage! I've got EBC standard pads and discs which are fine for me and no difference over oem from what I can...

Nice one Shaz. I always get great satisfaction working on my cars myself. And yes, I'd change the oil filter every oil change.

    Wow! I Bought One!

Looks like a nice buy! W-s-M is my old stomping ground although I'm in Sheffield these days. If you need a good garage I'd definately recommend Dave Flew at Delta Automotive Engineering. Ok, he's an old friend but he's as honest as they come and looks after each car like his own. He's the only...
