Must have been something in the connection mechanism that when you inserted something it broke the connection... Glad it's sorted.

Strange. Maybe it's a mechanical fault. In that when something's in there it's breaking the circuit unintentionally. Maybe take the socket out and give it a once over. Is the socket in the boot the same? If you don't use the boot socket, maybe you could swap them over... see if the boot's one...

How about if you try a different device in there, like a USB charger or something. Perhaps it's the lighter filament itself, not the socket?
