    keeper madness or not

Update on cambelt change. Rang a few dealerships and it appears to be a fixed price of £210 Inc vat. Valve clearances about another £100. Water pump another £100. So jsmith's list above is spot on (not that I was doubting you!)

    Air Temperature Performance

Hi Freddo Yes, agreed, you get more oxygen and hence bang for your buck when the air's cold. I was wondering if there's any 'automatic choke-like' probe or sensor affected by the ambient temperature and now maybe out of tolerance causing, for example, an inlet valve not to open 'correctly' and...

    Air Temperature Performance

Driving in on a cold crisp morning, I've noticed my 2000 1.8 drives and pulls a lot smoother at startup compared to a warmer morning, when I often experience some hesitancy and kangarooing. Overall, she's running much better than when first acquired, with regular blasts and daily motorway runs...

    keeper madness or not

Just got my 1.8 S back from its MOT after initially failing. Needed 2 new tyres (old ones had plenty of tread, but also some large bulges), headlights failing (polished up lovely with toothpaste), windscreen (crack as long as your arm. Luckily I 'now' am fully comp, hence windscreen cover!)...

Boot seems to be wet inside

Have a look in the spare tyre well too - is that full of water. Mine was like a swimming pool in there. If so, there are some bungs to drain it. Common water ingress areas are the hinges and the light clusters. Some members have took off their hatches (you say yours is the Booted saloon? - I'm...

    EGR Plate Clean (F18B2)

Interesting stuff on the petrol. Not sure I'll give it a go through, as they want 120.9p a litre for it at my local BP garage! I know that's still cheap compared to about a year ago, but still....!!!

    EGR Plate Clean (F18B2)

Well done, nice job jsmith. I did mine last year but it wasn't as bad as I'd been led to believe, ie not fully blocked just constricted (like my arteries!) I did mine as i had some 'hesitancy', really noticeable, when pulling away. However, when I first took it out after its clean, it stalled on...

    Strange wobble...

The shocks on my Passat deteriorated fairly quickly and were then obvious even for me to diagnose. If yours are returning to the level as they should (ie push down on a corner, up with little overshoot, then level) then exec's right. Drop links seem to deteriorate after about 100k according to...

    Strange wobble...

On my old Passat, I started noticing a slow undulation or wollow, which fairly quickly became worse. Rear shocks had gone and even I could tell by leaning on the corners.

    Brake pipes

Right, I've got her up on stands (again!) to treat a couple of isolated lenghts of rusty brake pipes. Not done it before. Rubbed them down with P150, then very fine crocus paper, then some Kurust. After its dry, is there anything to stop me coating the lengths with underseal? Can the MOT guys...

    Marty's facelift 6th Gen

She's looking damn fine. You appear to be an owner who lavishes attention on his motor - as such, what paintwork products, polishes, waxes and treatments do YOU administer? I've got a thread running and I'm after a wide range of views and experiences...

    Paintwork

Anyone used that 'Meguiars Ultimate Compound'? It looks good on YouTube for taking out swirls (I suppose it would though...)

    Marty's facelift 6th Gen

Not that much of a div. It's definitely different to the orange LCD clock on my pre-facelift (the oblong bit ABOVE the flip-down cubbyhole...)

    Paintwork

My paintwork's showing its age, dull and lifeless. Furthermore, it's got patches of odd circular scratches all round, as if the previous owner thought sandpaper was the thing to use... I've polished it with Autoglym a few times and it looks lovely in the rain (the way the water beads - oooohhh!)...

    Sorting the rust!

I've looked on the Ling's parts website and I'm actually talking about the fuel, return and vent pipes. No advisories mentioned about these on my last MOT - surely these are included in the test? Meanwhile, I'll look again for the brake lines...

    Sorting the rust!

Hi jsmith, I've been under mine and I'm in the process of spot treating the obvious bits. Whilst under there, I noticed the brake lines are looking rusty (quite bad, I thought, in places). There's plenty of a white residue (which I'm hoping isn't too much to worry about) with some rust coloured...

    Rear bumper support member?

Hi grentuu Looks like you've come the right place for info! Brake pads are an easy job to do yourself - I managed it! Check out the guide in the diy section. If you're short of certain tools, I'm down the M58, near Ormskirk. Pop by and we can sort it.
