Oil light and battery light came on

Hmmm - that'll teach me to speed-read things. I completely missed the oil light coming on. Good advice from Salim to check the battery voltages standing and started as there my be something amiss. However on the face of it that wouldn't explain the loss of power steering so there's something...

    cant select reverse gear

In that case it sounds very much as if the linkage from the box to the gearlever has a problem. No idea on the book time but I'd be surprised if it's more than a couple of hours. Alan

Oil light and battery light came on

Sounds very much like an issue with the auxillary belt tension. That's the only thing I can think of that would explain both issues. Alan

    cant select reverse gear

If this is a 6 speed gearbox then there's an electrically operated lockout mechanism to prevent accidentally shifting from 5th to reverse instead of 5th to 6th. It sounds like this could be playing up. Alan

    Strange Electrics

If I understand correctly the door open warning comes on with the door shut but if you plug the driver's seatbelt buckle into its stalk the warning goes away? If I've got the right can you please try a little experiment? With the ignition on and the doors shut plug the driver's seatbelt buckle...

    Sat Nav/AC/Info system

I think there's a lesson for all of us to learn from this. When faced with peculiar electrical/electronic faults it's always worth considering a change of battery before getting into more complicated (and expensive!) diagnostics and component replacement. Modern cars have become very sensitive...

    Tourer 2.2 Oil Leak

Must confess I've done something similar when trying to remove corroded alloy whhels from a car. Loosen off the wheel nuts, start it up and then move it backwards and forwards a few times until there's an almighty crack! Don't think I'd want to do it on a crankshaft pulley bolt though. Alan

    Tourer 2.2 Oil Leak

Removing the crankshaft pulley bolt is something I think you'll struggle with at home unless you've got access to a good impact wrench, either air-powered or electric. I haven't got the torque setting to hand but, if it's like most Honda engines, it will be over 300 ft.lbs. Alan

Half Leather to Full Leather, Can It Be Done?

Well done! This is on my (long) list of things to do so your explanation will be of great help. Glad you picked up on the issue of the seat heaters and possibly overloading the wiring. If you do wire up the heaters I'd certainly agree with taking a separate fused feed from the battery because...

    Seized Headlamp Adjuster

Well done. It is a bit(!) fiddly as I found out when I did mine at the weekend. They weren't seized but were getting very stiff to move. After a good spray of some suitable lubricant and a bit of working to and fro they freed up beautifully. Taking the light out is definitely the way to go...

    servicing price

Yes, I've used them. They're OK - not outstanding, but not dreadful either. If you do use them don't go into the main premises on Newmarket Road because the service dept is actually located in Cheddars Lane (next to Tesco). As Dan said why not have a go yourself. These are easy cars to do an...

That's the trouble with noises. You get rid of one, only to find that you can now hear something else! Alan

    Leather repair

Ian, just a thought but in the past when I've needed repairs to leather bits and pieces I've approached local saddlers and they've done the work to a high standard and at a reasonable cost. Perhaps you could try the same? Alan

    Wheel bearing fault?

The check on wheel bearings carried out in the MOT is fairly basic and will only pick up a bearing that is badly worn. I'd suggest you do the "wheel wobble" test - 3mm or so at the wheel rim is OK. Then rotate the wheel slowly by hand feeling for any roughness and finally spin the wheel and...

    Rear Screen Washer Jet

I was wondering why my rear screen washer produced a dribble, rather than a jet of water. Having looked at it carefully it seems that the little ball has dropped out of the plastic housing so I'm going to need to replace the jet ***embly. To do so I have to remove some of the interior trim...

    which clutch

It's a self-adjusting clutch. With these the loading of the clutch during the fitting process is important. If the self-adjusting mechanism is not set properly by loading the clutch premature wear will take place. It really does need a special tool to load the clutch, although not necessarily...

    Baby Car Seat Recommendations

I've had a look at the latest Which magazine tests. The Maxi Cosi Axiss doesn't do particlularly well. An overall score of 59% and 3 stars out of 5 for both frontal and side impact protection. I ***ume you're looking for a Group 1 seat (i.e. 9 to 18kg). Various Kiddy seats come out top with...
