2.4 - manual or auto

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to this forum so bear with me.

Although, bear in mind I am knowledgeable about cars in general, especially Honda's (I've owned 4 in my life thus far)

I understand there is barely any MPG difference between the 2.0 and the 2.4 (I had a 2.4 manual, which is now my mum's car).

What I'd like to know is:

1. How much difference under average driving is there between the manual and the auto in terms of MPG?

2. Is the auto gearbox any good? It's had good reviews from what I've read, but short to long term experience would be better.

My 2.0 Trip allows me to redline to 7k, but i'd personally prefer to get a Manual, If you're just after a comfortable cruiser with a bit of poke the auto does it great, Great with my daily commute, you still can have fun with it.

But I'd have much more fun with a manual.

Having driven the both 2.4 and 2.0 Manual and Auto, for me it's the 2.4 MT all day long.

The 2.4 auto isn't a bad box at all, and you'll hit the power band more often than the MT as, when you need kick-down, it'll drop the gears and let the engine spin to 6800 before a change. However, the AT just blunts the engine, there's no getting away from that. Even in triptronic mode, it's still blunt. The fluid coupling just cannot match the mechanical drive.

In terms of MPG, my MT 2.4 tourer gets about 32 MPG long run, about 26 MPG around town. The AT tourer gets about 28 mpg long run and 22MPG around town. The saloons are better.

In my A/T I've been getting 21mpg around town but this is very short trips, I only work 5 miles away. On a long run, which was mostly motorway I've had 30mpg.

There isn't much between them but it would depend on your annual mileage as to how much extra it would cost you in fuel. I only do 3-5k miles a year and on average fill the tank once a month.

I only bought an A/T so the missus can use the car as well, otherwise I probably would have gone for the M/T but I do enjoy driving the auto. The tiptronic gearbox is awesome for when I want a blast!
