After trawling the net myself this topic and not finding much information, I thought it might be useful for others to post this here...
I was looking for a way to either replace the factory fitted Bose radio head unit with something MP3/iPod capable, or modify the factory fitted unit to do this. Through TypeAccord I found the recommendation for the Xcarlink CD-changer device and purchased one.
There doesn't seem to be much information on the 2001 Type V / Bose system, with most 1998-2002 Honda Accord guides referring to a car with a completely different dashboard configuration.
However, I actually found the installation really straightforward, much more straightforward than the full dashboard removal suggested in the other online guides...
Firstly the Bose head unit does have a CD-changer port that works perfectly with the Honda model Xcarlink iPod interface. On my car with the built-in Honda navigation system, this CD-changer port was empty, so no need for a Y cable.
The installation procedure:
1. Unclip the veneer around the gearbox, this was easy to do with a flat head screwdriver, from the bottom then losen it around the edges. The top was a bit tricky, but came out if you pull it downwards.
2. Remove the ashtray, unscrew 4 screws holding in the black plastic stereo surround and ashtray moulding. There is a beige connector for the cigarette lighter and ashtray light, unclip this and put the plastic bit to one side.
3. Unscrew the 4 screws on the metal bracket containing the stereo and climate control unit, pull forward gently. There are lots of wires but there was enough length to pull the unit forward and access the CD-Changer port on the back.
4. I've tucked the Xcarlink underneath the glove box and fed the connector wire through the carpet into the central console through to the back of the head unit and connected.
5. Gently reverse the procedure to put it back together and check everything still works.
6. I plan to drill a hole in the bottom of the glove box to feed through the iPod and Aux audio cables to the Xcarlink box underneath. I noticed a lot of cable looms running under the glovebox, so will need to be really careful when doing this.
End result, full iPod integration with the stereo controls, Aux 3.5mm jack for my Android phone, all working great!
