Hi All;

Having a few gremlins popping up now with my Accord, 125k now on the clock and I now have the engine management light on, VSA lights on and the smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin on idle, reading through some previous posts it may be a cracked manifold, and I had the rear caliper replaced lat year so hoping the VSA issue is just a sensor, going to pop over to a friends garage later today and connect the reader to see what it comes up with, dont think its going to be cheap though, wish me luck!

Cheers
Paul

You could well have a cracked manifold, but it would have to be unusually bad to cause the EML to come on... in theory peak turbo operation could be affected and may then generate a 'boost pressure lower than expected' error code, but I've never heard of this actually happening. Therefore I'm guessing the warning lights are unconnected to the blowing manifold. You're getting the codes read anyway, so you'll soon find out what the problems are!

EDIT - Oh yeah, good luck. VSA problems can indeed be costly!

I was also reading about a blocked/restricted EGR, would this cause the fumes and EML?

Ah geez looks like the manifold may be goosed then, ill see what the mechanic say's later and let you know, thank and you (in that order)

Well just back from the garage and the mechanic could not get full access to the full abs/vsa system via his reader, this led him to suspect the module was knackered and not sending any diagnostics to the machine? He has advised that he has had the same issue with both BMW and most recently an Astra, he can send the old unit away for a refurb at a cost of approx £200 plus cost of removal and refitting, the EML seems to be a mystery too as the reader said unknown error, he has cleared all errors and told me to go straight back if it comes on again.

Ah well knew it would not be too cheap!

Many OBD2 readers (even pro garage ones) will not read the Honda non-engine codes, but the absence of available information shouldn't lead you to making expensive guesses.

UNFORTUNATELY I AM UNABLE TO POST LINKS*, but there is a very useful thread that may help you to read the VSA error code yourself. Use the search box to look for the word 'paperclip' and then open the thread started by a member called 'johnyy' on 20th October 2013 ***led 'Fault Codes trick...'

*Sorry for shouting, but I'm hoping someone eventually hears me!

As Jon says the codes your after might not be picked up with the garages code reader.
You need a proper Honda one or a snap on for hidden codes.
Or try the paper clip thing.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try the paperclip at the weekend, worth a try and at least I will have a better idea of where to look, I also will disconnect the negative on the battery for a while and see if it will reset itself, the mechanic also advised that the vsa light was now an mot failure so it will need to be dealt with soon, thanks for the tips and guidance so far!

Andy decent snap on machine can read the DTC's

Jon - heard you loud and clear mate, i'll ask Alnug to take a look.

Forgot to mention the manifold issue, the mechanic said he could smell it a little, on visual inspection he could see no soot or anything suspicious at the back of the engine so maybe I got off lighlty with that one but I'll keep my nose on it!

Are the smells there at start up and cold engine? do they go away when warmed up and driven? If so I would suspect something else seeing that you have no sooty marks, very likely the exhaust gas heater whatever that is or what it is supposed to do??

Yeah sometimes on cold frosty mornings I let the car idle to defrost and when I step into the car I can smell it a bit but when warm and running/moving I don't?

Mine only emits smoke noticeably when cold. If I get an ***istant to start it up from stone cold, then I do see smoke rising up between the engine and the bulkhead, but only for a couple of seconds. Been like this for years!

so does mine it's quite strong from the outside, just after starting up, but nothing in the cabin unless I open the window. Diesels should be driven away as soon as they start, "Warming " up does them no good at all, get it under load as soon as possible, but you must let it warm down following a "spirited" drive.

have you checked the injectors? if a seal is damaged then you will get a smell of fumes in the car... cheap to replace the seal but if the injector is stuck in hard it could become expensive!

I agree with mattlee, check you've not got blow by on one or more of the injectors. Just whip the engine cover off and (with the engine running) stick you nose over the injectors. You'll soon smell it if there is a leak. I've done 3 of mine so far and I'm going to have to replace the fourth injector, hopefully not until summer comes, as it is leaking off way too much and causing starting difficulties. I didn't have any problems getting the other 3 out, just make sure you get the engine well up to full operating temperature before you try.
