Hi guys, looking for advice.

Been to regas AC and was told they filled the freon, but the air compressor seems to be dead.
A friend of mine checked with Autel tablet that some clutch doesn't open.

Called a garage to ask for quote twice now, they leave me hanging. Another garage responded 850 for replacement which sounds more than I expected. Way more...
I looked online for parts can get from 150-200.

My dilemma is that I'm no car mechanic and probably would need to get a lot of tools to replace it and probably f something up. 850 seems like a very high price for a "nice to have feature". Does it even make sense to spend so much money on a car that's driven 160k. Or does the part play an important role for engines longevity?

Essentially looking for opinions what would other people do.

My cars aircon never worked since buying it 5 years ago.
I just live with it, haven't tried a re-gas so can't help.
how often is it needed in our climate.

Check for electrical and mechanical faults within the system before writing off the compressor. Can be something really cheap like a malfunctioning sensor, a bad relay or worn out clutch.

If you can freely spin the compressor clutch by hand then it's likely not completely dead.

Thanks for the answer, I'll look into that! ^^

I actually had a working aircon for 8 years without regas, only this summer it gave up before the heat waves. Maybe because i havent used it for a while.
