Evening all,

Got a PM from a member on AccordR asking if I'd carry out some paint correction on his new purchase. A couple of weeks later I had a Pirates Black ATR sat back in my garage :p

I won't apologise for the lack of pictures. The temperature on the day was hovering around 1 degrees and there was a strong wind blowing through that car park so I was in no mood to be taking photogenic snaps for everyone else to enjoy

The owner wanted the paint brought back to a respectable finish, good enough for the odd meet and bring back the purple to the paint.

When I first saw the car up at Knockhill I thought the paint looked OK but it wasn't until a good snow foam and over an hour with the spray and clay bar that I saw how bad it really was :-(

So the usual list was carried out -

*Full car washed using two bucket method and Meguiars shampoo plus.

*Front, sides and rear of car de-tarred using AS Tardis.

*Full car re-washed again.

*Bodywork clayed using Meguairs Medium clay bar.

*Full Body correction carried out using Porter Cable DA Polisher, 3M compounding pad and Megs Ultra Cut Compound #105.

*Full car then polished using 3M Perfect IT III Ultrafine SE Polish and 3M Perfect IT III SE Polishing Pad.

*Bodywork then sealed AG Extra Gloss Protection.

*A coat of Collinite No.915 Marque D'Elegance Car Wax then applied.

Before claying -

Owner had a new set of powder coated wheels to fit to the car so no time was spent cleaning the wheels and I was asked not to valet it either. It didn't make for the best of pictures but the paint came out good and a good coat of what I like to call "winter wax" should keep the owner happy until the better weather arrives :)

Good to be back in ATR again B)

Brilliant work mate if only you were in brum, my vesuvio red atr needs help lol

God I wish I had a Type R.

Or the patience to clean a car that thoroughly.

A very well done, looks stunning

Stunning mate B)

looks absolutely stunning mate. The finish looks very nice indeed.
Quick question, when you compound do you use water or just straight on to the body?
Reason I ask is that I recently compounded my dads car and it needed to be wet for me to compound. I find my buffer quite aggressive if it not wet, am I using the wrong buffing pad? Currently use a white foam pad.

Are you using a rotary or an orbital ?

What compound are you using ?

What brand of pad is it ?

All of these matter as the one thing you want to avoid is the build up of heat ! Let me know and I'll point you in the right direction ;)

It would be a nice drive up for you :) We have some of the best roads up here ;)

Many thanks, that was just a days work. I spent roughly 3 full days on my ATR shortly before I sold it.

Stunning mate B)

Thank you, I'm glad I have a silver car now, don't have the time to look after a Black car anymore. I'm sure you know where I'm coming from :)

I believe its a rotary buffer with variable speed and using g3 compund. The pad is just white which I bought from a paint suppliers shop. He showed me it on his buffer and he did it with ease without any water. He demonstrated ona car and it just floated on air

See your work is so good that a Subaru had to check its appearance in the paintwork! (what a tart!) B)

The Car looks so great for that time spent on it! :D

Have a quick read over the text above mate, it's Meg's compound.

If you are using an orbital then you can't go far wrong.

You-Tube is your friend, spend some time researching and you will be amazed at what can be achieved :)

Best of luck ;)

Now that is just porn!!!!!!

Great job on the cleaning - goes without saying tbh!!!! But looks stunning!!!!!!

AutoGlym Extra Gloss protection is amazing stuff. I use it after a wax though...am i doing it the wrong way round?

The difference in the car is amazing. Great job. That color on the car is lovely. Never seen it on a car in Ireland. Is it a factory color?

Andy mate i think that colour is Pirates Black. It was available only on the post facelift (and i think VERY late pre facelift) ATRs.

The black on the pre facelift ones is Nighthawk black.

Pirates black is my personal second favourite colour for a Type R, (Milano red being the first ;) ) It looks blakc normally, then purple in the light!!! B.E.A.utiful!!!

Many thnaks.

And yes, wrong order -

1. Polish
2. Extra Gloss Protection ( give it at least an hour to cure, more if possible )
3. Wax

As said above, it's a Honda Pearlescent. In my opinion it's one of Honda's best but with that it's an absolute pain in the **** to keep looking good.

Phased out many years ago but I've seen an S2000 and an Integra DC2 freshly re-sprayed with it recently and they looked stunning!

Thanks for the info guys. It is one of the best colors I have ever seen on them, not one you would see over here, there are very few Type R's. Quick question and apologies as it is off topic. What is the name of the alloys on that Type R they are lovely may have to keep my eye out for a set and do you know if they would fit the 1.8 face lift model. It has 4 studs on the wheel hub.

Again apologies for going off topic.
Andy

I'm afraid not mate.

I had a 2001 1.8 Sport before buying my 1999 Accord Type R and I almost made the mistake of buying a set of ATR wheesl for the sport. The ATR is a five stud :(

As for the wheel, in all my years, I've only ever known it to be recognised as "the ATR wheels". They were made by Speedline in Italy, commissioned by Honda.

thank you for the info Paul. I had a feeling they were five stud but wanted to make sure. Ah well then, back to the drawing board

Andy the 6th gen sport alloys are of the same design mate. They look pretty much exactly the same. and i think they are available in the 4x114.3 fitting you'd need.

Paul, in desperate need for you expert advice please. I know this is a Honda forum, please forgive me for picking your brain on a totally different brand but nevertheless using the same procedure you used to bring back the chine to any auto body! I just bought a BLACK 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 http://callplz.com/image/2fa86e6e with a front bull bar It hasn’t seen a polish since it left the show room (originally bought from Dubai) now i read and re read your comments very carefully. I have some questions if i may! I have decided to buy a complete kit for shampoo, cutting, polishing, claying, de tarring, waxing etc .the full works inc a rotary polisher on my small budget that i have. Some of my questions might sound stupid, please bear with me. Firstly, i have more easy access to Autogleem Products, can you suggest replacements in the Autogleaam range from the list of the products you used above! Is there any Autosmart tardis available in small amounts like 250ml perhaps?? All i found was a big 5 Liter can! Perhaps a different brand?! I’m based in the UK but the car is being used in North Africa in Sub Saharan Climate that reaches 52c! What type of clay should i use on the body? And why? The guy that owned the car had "touched up" a few scratches on the bumpers and body with that nasty nail polish type car body touch up stuff you get from Halfords, i want to somehow remove these nasty touch ups using the rotary polisher and some 1000/1200 grit sand paper then T.Cut or even use a color based (BLACK) cutting compound, is that ok?! Then polish the car using AG Super resin polish (is that the same as your "3m Perfect It Ultrafina polish??" Followed by AG Extra Gloss that i have used on my Flame Red 1969 Mercedes 123 it made a huge difference to the way the paint stayed so shiny till a young lady full of beer drove into it!! Finally A coat of Collinite No.915 Marque D'Elegance! What I’d like to ask you is, i don’t know what pads (colour & Size) go with what polish/wax/cutter/compound etc would you advice me based on my choice of rotary polisher what pads/backing plate/size and color pads i need to get to go with what product please? Do i need to use masking tape on handles trip etc? If so which type please? Do you think i will be able to correct the paint including those ugly touch ups (after i remove them I don’t know how ill remove them yet using this soft sand paper but im educating myself in youtube!) using the list of machine and products I’ve listed?! Also the headlight in the car are hazy, i saw this clip on youtube "Chemical Guys - How To: Headlight Restoration" but was wondering if there are equally good products available in the UK to get, from AG perhaps?! I heard of PITTMAN HEADLIGHT LENS CLEANER but not sure if it’s that easy, especially as due to very hot weather where the car lives i need a layer of UV protection in the end!!! Finally the car has cream leather and the center arm rest in front suffered some wear and is ow scuffed (size of an elbow or a tennis ball foot print!)and is in need of repair, any advice on that DIY product wise?! Ps: I will be cleaning the leather using Swissvax Leather Cleaner but seems quite expensive! :-( Finally Any advice on shining the Bull Bar? Someone suggested Coca Cola!!!! On a very different note, any idea how to remove very deep glass scratches off my 1969 Mercedes windows?!! :) and Sorry for so many questions but i hope it can be of help too to the rest of your fans! :) Many Thanks! Sam (Ps: I forgot to mention that the front right Fender has a dent in it and will def need to go to a panel beater or body repair so when it comes out it'll be very clear the difference in colour and shine!! Hence embarking on this project! :)
