This will probably be a daft question, but as I need to replace my air conditioning compressor on my 2003 2.4 petrol Type S does it have to be the specific one for that model or will others fit it ?

Also is there any way to check that a second hand one is ok before I get it fitted ?

Any ***istance would be greatly appreciated.

You can check part numbers on lings honda website http://www.lingshondaparts.com/
You can second hand from breakerlink and breakeryard or ebay

IIRC this has been covered elsewhere (by me) where I looked up the compressor for various 7th gens

I know that the aircon systems in the 2.0 and 2.4 are identical , so the compressor will be the same for any petrol 7th gen

I think that the compressor in the diesel, even though the system is different, is the same as in the petrols

I also think that the 8th gen compressor is the same, because the aircon systems are basically same as in 7th gen

There is no way for a DIYer to check before fitting, but most breakers will take it back

Also, if you want to be pedantic when making the swap, after getting the gas out you have to block the pipes on the system to stop the lubricant oil coming out. Then drain the compressor into something where you can measure the oil drained out, and make sure that the substitute compressor has the same amount of oil
(drain it and fill with the oil from the original)

No real way to check secondhand unless in vehicle most breakers give 3 months warranty

that's a different question, since he doesn't ask more, we can only ***ume that the OP knows what he is doing, and hence answer his question, answer is that compressors in all 7th gen petrol models are the same, and IIRC so is the one in the diesel model

Thanks for your quick responses people !
To put a bit more meat on the bone as it were I have a 2003 Type s with 210000 miles on the clock.
I had noticed the air-con not getting cold so called in an air-con specialist who took less than 5 minutes to put a meter on and diagnose that the compressor had gone !
He quoted around £700 to replace it which I would ***ume means he would use a copy part or said I could get a s/h one which he would fit for £150
As I've not got the tools or inclination if I'm honest to do this myself this is why I'm on the hunt for a s/h one for him to fit but as the 2.4 ones are not that readily available hence my question about if others will fit.
Also has anybody got any thoughts on the copy ones which are available as I could get these for around £250 which is a bit better price than an original part at £750 ! although the guy said if I brought one of these the job would be more entailed and cost more ?

on that basis, it might be a risk to get a 2nd-hand one and find that it too is inop after he has fitted it ?

but I don't understand why a copy part would be more expensive to fit, you need to ask him why

other than those issues, it won't matter whether the replacement is OEM or copy part, I replaced the condenser (aka aircon radiator) on my car some years ago, a copy part from Unipart for about £70, and it is still ok

but the compressor on my car has packed up, what I intend to do is get a shorter belt to remove the compressor and strip it down. Maybe see if someone can do same thing for you (get a shorter belt and remove the compressor) ? btw I think honda_saj was implying something similar. If you want to wait until I've removed the one on my car, I'll let you know the length of the shorter belt.

You'd have to check the part numbers but you might get more joy on eBay searching for an Acura TSX compressor using the worldwide search option.

Many specialist parts that are "Honda" are of course not made by Honda, but by a specialist contracted by Honda. The designers just specify a certain size compressor and the contractor recommends one from their range. To achieve economies of scale Honda will then try to use the same part across as many production vehicles as possible. But they may give it separate part numbers for different cars and models (which totally sucks)

So if the manufacturer of a "copy part" is a specialist in that particular product, you should not encounter any problems. It will have the same warranty in any case.

Absolutely. For at least a decade and a half, Honda only really make petrol engines and design their own body-shapes, most of the rest is outsourced, from ICE and aircon, right down to braking systems etc

(btw there is another forum where their "leader" believes otherwise).
