Ok folks i have read on some other forums that some atr owners have removed the balance belt? what's the benefit for doing this??
Also im looking at getting my timing belt done and the auto tensioner, now how much are these to buy? and what the life span in these also? Is it worth getting the valve clearences done at the same time as belt? Sorry for the questions but new to hondas so thought i would ask people who know more.
The removal of the balance belt it worth while. I've got mine off and the improvement is defiantly noticeable. It's just less for the engine to turn meaning more power to the wheels. It's a free mod. Doesn't increase the HP but does increase the WHP.
The belt turns 2 'cylinders' at the bottom of the engine. Was put there from the factory to make idle silent. But as I've said the increased vibration at idle is negligible.
The auto tensioners will last the life of the belt. The car comes with an auto tensioner from the factory. Just person opinion here, but I prefer having a manual one.
With regard to valve clearances, it's always worth getting these done once a year anyway. Just make sure the engine is stone cold when setting. Ideally it should be left standing overnight.
Hope this helps dude. Any other questions or anything you want explaining more, just ask dude.
Well i aint doing this stuff myself but my atr is starting to sound a bit funny like auto tensioner going as sounds a bit tappy ?? its hard to say what it sounds like lol
Do you have a manual tensioner on yours and do these need adjusted alot or so on ??
If it sounds tappy then VCs are always a good cheap place to start and easy to do yourself. I've put the gaps on here.
The manual tensioner is a fit and forget part. But more 'reliable' and trustworthy than the auto equivalent. And yes I've got one on mine. My mod list is in my sig under my posts mate.
What miles are on your car and when was the timing belt last changed?
its got 129k on it and paperwork says belt was done around 120k, not sure if auto tensioner was done then tho as will need to check. Is there a how to on the vc's mate?
Im loving the atr and sfter 9 scoobs that i done most of the work myself i dont want to do the belt on the atr same as i never done it to the scoobs, i have a great guy so will peak to him about doing the belt and tnsioner for me. Will need to find that how to tho as want the car back to sounding mint.
I can't find my how to ATM, but it's on here somewhere.
What scoobs did you have? I've got my ATR and a modded GC8 555 RA. At 217 on the ATR and will be somewhere north of 370 on the scoob when she gets mapped.
Thanks mate for your help, i am going to get the manual tensioner and new belt done after xmas, will get the ballance belt removed at same time.Im thinking of getting the head gasket done also just for piece of mind really.
