Heading out the other day the gearbox wouldn't go into 4th, it just reved. I checked the auto fluid and it was very low, limped to a garage and bought 1.5 ltrs of auto fluid and topped up. It was a bit better, then it got worse. It lurched badly at random revs, speeding up and slowing down (disabled wife getting thrown about, so not happy). Called the insurance co for breakdown recovery to take us the rest of the way.

So i think that the low fluid may have damaged the gbox, it still selects the gears like forward, reverse d1 etc but after 1st it just slips.
The engine and the rest of it it still sound so i would like to repair. Stuck at thorpe park now and was wondering if anyone local can lend me a fault reader (and show me how to use it!). Will it do any good to remove the solenoids and have poke about? or cut my loses and scrap it?

Cheers all

The auto boxes on the 6th gen are renound for failing. There was a thread on here about this a while ago. The best thing you can do is to buy another box from a scrappys or similar.

Sorry it's not better news. There are no easy fixes when it comes to the auto boxes. The best thing to do would be to take the box off to make sure that it is failing, and then fit another one.

I thought as much, oh well, on that note, has anyone done a box swap and have any tips?

The only tip i think anyone should know about a box swap is - Get someone else to do it. I've seen what's involved to be honest it really looks rather complicated unless you know your way around the engine of your car.

It's not the easiest job in the world, and if you don't really know what you're doing you could cause more problems. You'll definatly need a ramp to do it. A pit just isn't wide enough.

It can be quite an expensive thing though for someone else to do, but needs must and all that.

Saj, are you gettin rid of the old girl? :(

yea i am dude
