just got back from hols towing caravan the car was faultless , but got home and when cold gear seems to jump from1st to 2nd with a jump which you can really feel, happened 3 times now need i worry or is this just a hiccup .

Hey fella.

Glad there wasn't any issues towing the caravan.

Now, the dreaded Auto box on the 6th gen. This is a known fault on the 6th gen, and tbh the best thing that you can do with the car at the moment is to continue driving it and see if it starts to happen more frequently or gets worse.

If it does get worse, then i'm sorry to say that you need to get the car to a garage and they'll have to have a look for you and maybe even have to recondition the box or get a replacement.

Hopefully it's just temporary though and will sort it's self out in time.

Knew i had this somewhere.

The cause of the problem is the main carrier bearing is wearing out prematurely, causing the transmission to shift unexpectedly and oddly. It is much more noticable when the transmission is cold.

Also some kind of hydraulic actuator changes the gears, and when the transmission works fine, it has more than enough pressure to shift. This is also one of the problems.

Honda sent out an axtended warrenty about this. Any car under 100K miles should be able to get it repaired.

hello, just been round to my local Springfield Honda they say there was no extended warranty, sounds like i might have a problem!

Towing with an autobox is not a good idea in my opinion. In fact towing in general depending on what you are towing of course does put extra stress on the car.

The first thing I would do is a full gear oil change and only use genuine honda ATF. Using anything else will cause jerky gear changes. Other than that, it may require more specialist help.

i have a 2000 1.8i se auto and the problem i have is when it changes gear from 1st to 2nd it slips in when it selects 2nd it takes ages to fit into gear, and then it changes to 3rd. on sometimes it selects 2nd and it slips and then it judders on occasions. could this be the same problem?

I am about to buy a 2.0l Auto , 67k miles , should I be concerned about this gearbox issue . Does anyone know if there is an extended warranty on the gearbox .

Thanks

It would appear that honda HAVE got an extended warranty of 7 years 100k . Does this apply to the 2.0L AUTO VTEC SE EXECUTIVE 5 DR HATCH ?
I will phone them tomorrow .

brief update. Jus spoke to Greenacre Honda and Mark the warranties guy took my reg n said nothin on ur car mate. His bulletins only start from 03 n he goes that mine will have expired. Explained to him the problem n told him mileage n he goes its down to a worn clutch. I said it doesn't have a clutch he argued sayin it does. Also stated if i wanted it lookin at then it would cost me £60 for a diagnostics.
So i rang back as though i'm callin from a garage n spoke to parts n gave the chap my reg n asked for a clutch. He was confused and asked if its an auto i said yes it is. He said it doesn't have a clutch. I told him his colleague had told me the fault was down to a worn clutch.

So my local Honda garage are pretty much useless

Moral of the story....don't talk about mechanical problems with a non-mechanic if you expect to get the right info.;)

hey guys

another update, carried out a flush on the gearbox yesterday, and oil that came out was not nice. fresh ATF in and the slipping i was getting in 2nd gear has settled, still there just not as bad as it was. is there any gearbox flush treatment anyone can recommend? apparently some say that this gearbox has a sump which can be removed and there are filters inside that need to be cleaned or replaced, Anyone able to elaborate on this please?

Hey ppls

Dont know if anyone reads my posts.

Found a company local to myself, called NorthWest Honda Specialist. I spoke to a chap there called Paul who i advised of the problem i was having with my car and he straight away diagnosed that this gearbox has a fault that the friction plates inside the box are very poor and will have worn out. I'm not sure how much it will cost. he was unable to provide me with a price as he will not know the extent of the damage on the internals.
Would anyone know where i can get a reconditioned box at a good price with gurantee? or would it be recommended this place to look at it?

I think options include

buy and fit/have fitted a 2nd hand one from ebay or partsgateway and keep your fingers crossed it's a good'un

go to autobox specialist and hope they are a good one. recommendation from a regular garage is best but sometimes garages are cagey apparently because the good ones are like gold dust and the garage doesn't want them swamped with work so the garage keeps their clout with them.

get a reconditioned box - this would worry me if they might be using aftermarket parts

Q - why would a worn friction plate cause a jump from 1st to 2nd?

Also why would internal damage be unknown if problem is just a worn friction plate?

Be careful.....
