Hi,

how you know i have an petrol 2003 auto gearbox and driving on motorway i was wondering at what rpm and how should i tell if above 50mph i'm in the 5 gear or not ! or is still in the 4 gear?

what i can tell is that 1-2-3 changes around 2000-2500rpm but the 4->5 gear is 3500-4000rpm... correct ? that's what i feel when i press the acceleration pedal !

so, to reach faster the 5 gear i should go manual and speed up or go on auto and put the acceleration pedal down !

so, at what rpm changes from 4 gear to 5 and it stays there ( i have read in the accord manual that from 5 gear changes to 4 under 50mph or something like that ) !

cheers

looked again in the accord manual and is says that it's safe to change from 4->5 in manual mode at speed above 32mph or something like that...

ok, but in automatic mode how i should tell if above 30/35/40mph is in the 5 gear or in the 4 ? this is the tricky part !

also the manual says that the torque convertor when is working (when is locking) should feel like a changing gear, do anybody feels this working ?
if yes, in what conditions?

Cleanest way to tell what gear the box is in it to flick to manual mode when cruising. The number on the dash will tell you what gear the box is currently it.

Now, you may feel a slight change in the box/engine/drive when you do this, but this is the torque converter lock up releasing and is normal. The gearing on the auto box is quote long/tall and from memory 70 mph is about 2,600 RPM in 5th in the auto. The manual gearing is a bit shorter.

If you flick back from manual mode to auto, you *may* feel the lockup happen it will happen 2-3 seconds after the flick and the rev's should drop by a small amount (e.g. 200-300) on the rev gauge.

thanks jay for your reply...i appreciate !
also i really like to drive on auto and not manual but i would love to know when i'm in the 5 gear on auto mode so on cruising not to stay in manual mode; isn't hard to stay on manual but i just want to know...
everybody know that on the motorway, even if is motorway you must stay sharp !

70 mph is about 2,600 RPM in 5th in the auto - are you sure?
is it possible that at 2200 rpm to be in the 5 gear on auto on motorway...i think is something 55/60mph or close ! or its 4 ?

i would like to read some official information somewhere !
cheers

Oh I'm not saying you don't move from D to M and stay there. Just move to M to see what gear the box is in and then move back to D. If you note the RPM you'll know if you're in 4th or 5th.

Yeah, it's about 2,600 RPM. Now maybe it's 2,700 or 2,800 but it's there abouts. 4th would push it up to about 3.3K RPM. For 55 mph it's about 2K RPM. Remember 5th is quite tall and has a broad range.

All I can find for the official docs is the troubleshooting guide, in relation to the TPS. But it makes normal sense that at a TPS of 0.8V (i.e. you're backing off to cruise) you'll be at 5th between 39-44 MPH with a lockup from 48mph onwards.
