Over the last week my Ctdi seems to crank over alot before it finally starts either hot or cold , ive also noticed from cold on acceleration I hear a ticking noise , seems to clear off as my car gets warm

I changed the fuel filter 2 weeks ago and bled it again this morning in which a good bit of Air came out , also took engine cover off and checked all injector connections and they looked okay , car still seems to take along time to start , used to start at the turn of the key in the past , any idea's

A ticking which disappears when warmed-up could be a cracked manifold? But that wouldn't affect starting at all... that's more likely to be excessive injector leak-back (or the fuel rail pressure valve leaking), or even a below-par battery.

Does it complete disappear or get quieter? could also be timing chain.

It goes quiet when its warm mate , timing chain was replaced about 20,000 miles ago , how do you check injector leak back

I thought ticking from cold was just the injectors and then will go quiet when warm.
As for the poor starting what is your battery like Gaz

Battery seems good , how do I test for a faulty injector
I think Gaz the best way is to put the car on a HDS reader Fahad has one

Just been out in the car now and when cruising in 5th about 60mph when you put your foot down slightly on the accelerator it feels a bit like its misfiring ( a bit lumpy through the accelerator pedal

Injector leak-back testing videos are on YouTube. Easy DIY (but replacing duff injectors can be tough!). Or search TA for more info...

engine warning light is on all the time now , its kicking out alot of dark smoke when accelerating and ive just turned the engine off and now it wont start , just cranks over and wont fire up

Gaz You can sometimes find out if an injector is is leaking by a black soot mark around the injector.

ill get the codes read tomorrow by a local garage , reading through past threads injectors look to be the cause

Just started car up now from cold and it started after a while , got to be an injector when you rev it over 3k you can hear the loud ticking , kicking aload of dark grey / black smoke out on acceleration

Cars now fixed , did a leak back test and found injector number 4 the problem , went and bought one from a breakers earlier refitted it erased faults and car is good again

The injector that was at fault was like new when we taken it out , all 4 injectors where replaced with brand new ones when the timing chain was replaced about 20k ago , is there anywhere that can recondition this so I could keep it as a spare just incase another one fails in the future.

Thanks everyone for your help

Result!

Hopefully the coding info on the replacement injector was entered into the ECU. Not critical, but it'll run better if that has been done (HDS can do it).

I guess you could google diesel injector refurbishment places in your area?

Great result Gaz

Hope you used new copper washers when you did your injectors, and as pointed out it's wise to have them calibrated to the ECU.

i can do this as part of a diagnostic service.

All injectors have got to come out next week mate because its having a new rocker cover gasket fitted , I ordered the kit with new copper washers , ill contact you mate when I have to drive past your way and you can calibrate them for me
