Had the Accord just over a week now and quite liking it :) The pull to the right turned out to be the tyres, so a rotation and rebalance sorted that (although the wheel is still a few degrees off) but I've spotted something else in the last couple of days.

I've already mentioned the firm clutch and extremely low biting point, which everyone helpfully advised me was about par, but I've also noticed that first and second can be a bit notchy unless the pedal's completely buried in the carpet. Not a major problem, but I noticed that if I'm pulling away from standstill and using low revs, I'll often get an odd single cough/bark from the engine bay. There's no feeling of judder or shaking and it pulls away fine, just after making that sound. if I hold the revs a bit higher and feed in the clutch, it's ok. I've checked for slip and there's none of that either.

Just wondering if that's ringing bells with anyone?

Not sure if it's connected, but I've spotted that under load there's a slight rustle from behind the bulkhead - on a balanced throttle it goes, but you can hear it when you accelerate. It almost sounds like air blowing, but it's not an induction sound.

russel & bark ?
you sure you dont have a dog woofing under your bonnet ;)

can you explain this cough/ bark your hearing ?
I would say its a rear brake binding which would give a slight shudder but you say its from the front ?

the sound you are hearing when you accelerate 'like wind blowing' is it a slightly high pitched noise ?
obviously the turbo will make noise as its blades try to compress the air in to the turbo (from the Variable Vains), and it is much more noticable now its cold outside.

if im barking up the wrong tree then please correct me

ok im finished with the dog jokes now

Wow I never realised they made a K24 turbo ;)

Dude he has a 2.4 petrol. woofing would be the least of his worrys if his car had a turbo bolted to it.

face palm!

i scanned his avatar and saw a 2.2.... now looking at it again i can see its 2.4

i am going barking mad!
anyway back on topic.. lets help this man....

what fuel are you using in the car? when was the fuel filter last change... maybe the bark could be the timing being retarded to counter a pre det ?

Heh, entertainment value :)

It's an incredibly tricky sound to describe, but it only happens at the biting point under low (borderline stall) revs. If pushed I'd say it's more likely towards the back of the bay. Erm... ******it, there's got to be some sensible comparison.

Ok, has anyone ever used pedestal drills or small lathes that are worn and getting on a bit? You know when they're winding down and as they're about to stop you get that sound that's part rumble / part grate for just a second? That's about as close as I can explain it. It sounds like a dry bearing juddering slightly, but there's no sensation of anything loose.

its not as entertaining as me reading the thread wrong.. i thought it said.. 'barking when being taken up the drive'

anywho.. how many miles has the car done?
could it be the clutch release bearing ? it might rattle a bit just at biting point.... maybe ?

I thought that only followed a heavy night on the shandy?... ;)

It's on 77k but I don't know if it's ever had a new clutch. Clutch release bearing sounds feasible, although I've tried to provoke it into slipping and it's not having any of it :) The key might be in figuring out why it only happens at very low revs - something about that must allow whatever it is to judder, whereas higher revs keep things in line.

It's not a major issue, but as it's less than 2 weeks since I bought it I want to identify any provable issues so I can take them up with the trader.

Clutch release bearing, nothing to worry about mate they all start to make some noise after a few years. I've never known one to fail completely (yet).

my release bearing has been making noise since i got my car and has got no worse and has had no ill effect. It is more age related than wear related i believe.

Good call all round there I reckon :) Shall keep an eye on it, but I reckon by the time it goes (if it ever does) it'll probably be time for a new clutch anyway :)

Cheers all, much appreciated. Virtual pints all round :)

Just paid attention this time so I could describe it properly :) It's like one of those poxy old horns you used to get on Volkswagens... or even like the one on Oliver from Top Gear, if you remember that. Kind of a gutless, gritty honk from the back of the engine bay. Only tends to happen once early on in a journey, but pretty loud. Bizarre.

Yeah, That's your release bearing. Not the end of the world mate. I find if i raise the revs ever so slightly when pulling away it doesn't make the noise on mine.
It only happens once in a while for me now so it's just not worth changing a healthy clutch over a bit of noise every now and then.

Yes does sound like the release bearing within the gearbox. Basically they go dry of grease and then begin to make this noise. They will not fail but will make an annoying noise.

If you have any friends who know about cars get a second opinion from them while they are in the car.

Hope that helps

Sounds good - as long as it's not going to grenade on me I can live with it; it's not as if it does it often :)
